They poured a large concrete pad with the base of the crane mounted in it on Friday!

Word is this next development is light years away. Consider us lucky we got a QEW Service Road Hotel format in our downtown. This building will be seniors housing in a few years, that's why it was built as long-term suites.

The crane is completely up, and there was a fair amount of activity on the site today as I drove by this afternoon around 4:40.

It's great seeing the crane along Main St today. Guess I'll have to create a separate development thread for the condo building.

I heard from councillor Farr that they are starting on the parking garage underground that will be shared between both facilities and next after that is the Homewood Suites hotel. That's a bit surprising but it's the word from the Vranich camp anyways. Good to see some progress either way.

Above the parking garage, beside what is left of the Federal building I am guessing. I would assume they will either turn what is left of the Federal into condo's or make it a massive condo/hotel thing? Not sure. Given Vranich's piss poor reputation, I am very much taking a "believe it when I see it" approach.

In addition to 182 rooms and suites, this 17-story hotel comes complete with a restaurant, bar, exercise room and indoor swimming pool as well as a large convention centre built to meet the needs of the city of Hamilton.

On the former HMP site. Okay, I've got it.

I'm verrrrrrrrrrry surprised that this project is going ahead so quickly...or at all for that matter.

I don't like Vranich but I hope he proves the skeptics wrong and actually does something worthwhile for the city.

While it's nice to see downtown development, I'm not crazy about the vision of a surface parking lot for such a prominent corner like Main and Bay streets

I'm pretty sure it's owned by somebody else. I don't think it was ever part of HMP and it's been empty forever. I couldn't even tell you what once stood on that corner. I can only assume the owner's happy with making a few bucks off parking or is hoping to sell it for a bundle some day.

Notice how the physical hotel that has been built looks nothing like the mega block in the rendering. I don't see a featureless stucco box anywhere there.

The north-west corner at Main and Bay was the Dodsworth & Brown Funeral Home demolished around 1990.

It is barely visible in the rendering. It's the squat building with the black sloped roof just west of the tall white building on the north side of George.

I am no fan of stucco, but as the finishing continues the building is not nearly as bad as I feared when I first saw the stucco being applied. The brickwork and glass finishes on its front facing Caroline looks, well, typical for any new urban long-term stay hotel anywhere really.

That corner is privately held. There was a picture of a proposed building in the old Hamilton Construction - The Great Big Boom section going back to around 2004/5. I could not find it.
