As far as the Staybridge Suites is concerned, it's a done deal. There are likely some finishing touches still to be done but this is what we get and it is different from the rendering.

Here's the sign going up:

Yeah I know, for a building I don't like very much, I sure do take a lot of pictures of it! The irony is not lost on me. I guess it's just like somebody else said, we don't have many hotels downtown [or anywhere in the city], so it's kind of a big deal. Pretty lame really.

Let's hope the finished product for 150 Main is closer to the mark.

Not really what I would describe as highly visible, and it will be even less so when the corner of King and Caroline is redeveloped. No mater how you slice it, George and Caroline simply is not a high profile intersection.

So this is under construction, crane and all, with no presales or financing? No building permit or site plan? And likewise for the homewood suites? This after major capital was sunk into the staybridge and Sheraton renovations. Either darko has a bigger stash than we ever thought, or there is something fishy.

As for the fishiness, it's probably a healthy thing to be skeptical.

That said, I'm pretty damn sure that Darko's got some dough in the bank unlike other 'developers' in town. He's got several hotels in the Golden Horseshoe and a few up North. And God knows strip clubs are generally big money makers, so he's doin' okay.

it looks like they just dumped crunchy cement into forms, added some "designed" openings along the eaves and called it a day.

I miss the days when people actually made buildings, instead of boxes.

it angers me to no avail to see many canadian cities fall to this sickening trend

I recall reading that the Pigott building cost about $1M back in the late 20s. I wonder what it would cost to build something like that today? $100M? $250M? $500M? I've got no idea.

Anyway, there are developers out there who care but in the end they only care as much as the city does which explains why stucco is the material of choice in Hamilton.

If your $1M figure is accurate, no wonder no one builds real buildings anymore. With inflation, that's only about $13M, and there's no way you'd be able to build a building like that for only $13M in this day and age.

Hmmm that's interesting. Yeah, the figure would be much, much higher. The labour costs alone would be ridiculous.

The friezes will now be protected for millennia.

That's no ordinary stucco that's shown in the rendering -- it's archive-grade, acid-free conservation stucco.

The covenant required the builder to leave them intact, not in view.

Who's that James North artist that takes pictures of architectural details and posts them on top of same detail? That could be useful here. If that's too obtrusive, then perhaps a scan code leading to a 3-D web page.

It's a rendition not a rendering, that is the process of creating a rendition. Chill out about the friezes, that rendition is not detailed enough to say that they are going to cover the limestone base with stucco. It's development of a derelict building, I'm sure we all would have liked to see it preserved in its entirety but enough remains for use to remember what stood there while moving forward at the same time.

I was making a funny. I know that renderings are approximate (eg. Staybridge).

Just drove by. I see portions of the footings/foundations have been poured for both the new condo tower and hotel closer to Bay.

The base for a 2nd crane is cemented in place. It is about the middle of the new hotel site.

re: Parking lot.

Darko doesn't own it. This was discussed earlier or perhaps in a different thread. I don't recall where exactly. Anyway, the owner's holding onto it like grim death. Probably asking for an unreasonable amount.

Anywho, great progress at that site. I'm stunned actually.

As Jon said earlier, I'm surprised there's *still* no pre-sale. Strange that this is progressing so quickly without anything like that...

That is bizarre... it's quite Vancouver-esque in it's nature; just build something, ANYTHING, and it'll sell out in a matter of hours. I'm obviously exaggerating a little bit, but you get the picture.

Anyways, good news about the place... I drive by it everyday on my way home from work.
