Not sure what any of this really proves, though.

Canadian Running magazine ran an excellent profile of him this past December.

It's hard to believe that someone who ran a sub-4:00 marathon a year ago at the age of 85 would pass away. I would expect someone like that in elite physical condition to live until the age of 100.

Unfortunately there are a thousand ways to die. He may have been cardiovascularly above average but may have had other issues. Either way, a life well lived, RIP.

^ I don't think it's much of a stretch to say that the Toronto Maple Leafs are essentially the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the NHL. In other words, a very, very enthusiastic hotbed of fan support despite the fact that virtually all other markets are more lukewarm.

There's a reason that Forbes values the Leafs at $1 billion with the next two teams being worth significantly less (NY Rangers, $750M; Montreal, $575M). Once you get beyond those 3 big-money teams, the range for the remaining 27 teams plummets to a comparatively meager $130M-$350M..

What year are your Forbes #'s from? 3 teams valued at more than 1 billion last year, Maple Leafs being #3 behind the Rangers and Canadiens.

FWIW, Karmanos bought the Hartford Whalers in 1994 for $47M. Not a bad increase in valuation for a team that's relocation bait in the eyes of many.

Back to March Madness, folks!

Seems like RDS thinks that Québécois sports fans need to get into March Madness. It's not even close to being the lead item on its webpages and on its sportscasts, but it's showing up here and there now in RDS' web and onscreen presence.

Keep in mind that RDS and TSN are the same corporate property. Same logo and everything.

Worth mentioning than in over 20 years in Quebec, hanging out with guys in my demographic (including spending all of this past weekend with over 20 other dads at a tournament for our kids), I've *never* had anyone talk about March Madness.

Cool. It's been too long since there has been high level soccer in this town... the Fury folded up in 1993 and that was pretty well it.

How much did Gillett buy the Habs and their arena for back in the late 90s?

And just imagine if that a$$ Loria had built a stadium for the Expos. It would have been an even smarter investment.

Gillett paid about 275M and sold to Molson for about 550M.

More arrogance on display by Toronto MLS fans ahead of their home opener. When CP24 interviews a fan as to why he's so dedicated here's his answer:

Quote:
"They're the only team that matters. The Jays don't matter, the Raptors don't matter, the Leafs don't matter, and the Argos suck!"
And then they wonder why they have a reputation for being condescending a**holes who have no respect for this country's culture. You wouldn't hear fans of any other Toronto sports team talk with such vitriol towards the other teams.

^ It has become a part of their fan culture, for better or for worse. Seems goofy to me, but it's pretty harmless stuff.

Oh look, it's the culture gestapo lol...relax man, people joke around all the time. There's actually a lot of overlap between Jays fans and TFC fans, literally hundreds if not thousands of Jays hats and hoodies at TFC matches. And noone talks smack about other sports teams in Toronto like Argos fans, that's certified fact. Go on there message boards and you see it everywhere, TFC fans only talk smack about the Argos (and less so nowadays), one guy making comments in a joking manner otherwise is hardly indicative of a trend. Raptors fans making jokes about Leafs fans is hardly indicative of general sentiments either as they have a lot of cross promotion and attendance. TFC/Leafs/Raptors/Jays fans tend to cross promote or attend each others games, there's a lot of mutual respect there.

It sounds harmless but that type of singular mob mentality is at the root of European soccer hooliganism/misogyny and has already manifested itself into verbal attacks against women outside the BMO Field. F*ck her in the p*ssy?

They have a sense of entitlement to say what ever they want to whom ever they want. It has all the hallmarks of a mob in the making and that's dangerous. They become more brazen and threatening and get validation/support from the group who encourage it to continue/go further. It's ugly and needs to be challenged or it will escalate. What's next, beating up Argos fans? It wouldn't surprise me one little bit.

I'm not surprised one iota that you back this sort of thing up. It's that tired old misogynistic frat boy mindset (boys will be boys) that Trump subscribes to. It has no place in society and not as harmless as you think. I'm sure you're never at the other end of it.
