Somehow I think you are going to bring more embarrassment upon yourself than pain unto us. Actually, having to wade through tens of your pictures of one-sided or incomplete street walls that don't qualify as urban canyons won't be fun...

Thats because I took those pictures before I knew there would be a thread.....

Because of the weather, I will have to stick close to the indoors, but should be able to get some wicked shots of York, Bay and King today. If Im lucky ill sneak down to Queens Quay for the canyon no one here has even posted, and is perhaps the most high and consistant canyon in Toronto at a solid 40 storeys all the way across. This canyon will rain distruction on all wouldbe CANYONS............

Next I suppose you're going to: Bring a world of hurt and go medieval on our asses!

Awesome! That's what we were expecting from TO!
I might add 1 or 2 pics for you guys (from 2008)

And MTL's older canyons are also well represented thanks to Darkoshvilli

(special mention to CGY's flickr shots in the first pages)

Does Hamilton have minor canyons to show? Victoria? Halifax? Mississauga? Québec? Burnaby? KW??

Hamilton has ripped down too many buildings to have good canyons

I believe he's telling Caltrane that he (and others) are just ignoring the "Toronto canyon" detractors since he already knows Toronto has canyons, especially on the waterfront.

Even saying Bay street is a canyon from the lake to north of Bloor is a bit of a stretch. The east side of Bay north of City Hall is a cliff for sure, but the west side never matches its consistency and height to be a real canyon. Sections of it work but others don't.

In my opinion Toronto has many short spurts that are canyon like, if you squint and don't think about what happens at the end of the next block (ahem... surface parking lot).

In my humble opinion, a canyon should stretch for many city blocks, have consistent height on both sides of the street and few if any setbacks.
Man, you're strict! If you have kids I'm sure they always get their homework done on time.

As far as the actual "rules" I agree to a point, but I disagree about having consistent height and stretching for many blocks. As long as a section of street is lined with highrises, it should be considered a canyon even if they vary is height. And not all canyons need to be expansive. Short ones can be nice as well. Remember, the rule should be for defining canyons, not NY/Chi caliber canyons in general, which would obviously have much stricter criteria.
