Cumberland Theatre in Yorkville has closed down. Presumably much of its traffic was funnelled away by the TIFF Bell Lightbox. The space is to be renovated and re-opened a year from now as Toronto's second (but first stand alone) Nespresso Boutique.

There's really no indication at all that ciniplex wanted to close the complex themselves, rather it was the landlord that terminated the deal; They were on a monthly lease as the developer made it clear that they were looking to redevelop the property.

While the bar/retail shop you mentioned will make its way there I believe there will be a couple other spaces; So essentially the tenant thinks they can make more through leases this way ... which is probably the case as nespresso is willing to pay for the renovations and signed a long term deal.

Having said that, one would imagine the lightbox did indeed eat away that the clientele.

That is such a shame, as the Cumberland was a great central theatre for east end people who wanted a central theatre right on the subway. I have had a number of nice evenings having a snack or drink in Yorkville, followed by a movie there.

Anyway as long as it is not another condo, I guess it is ok what they are doing.

There's always the Varsity Cinema in the Manulife building a couple blocks away.

You serious? You could pretty much fall out the front door of Cumberland and land in Varsity theater.

I will miss the movie ads that hung over the alley next to the theatre between Cumberland and Bloor. Friends from out of town would always be surprised when we'd turn down what looked like some shabby back alley and emerge in the middle of Yorkville.

The Cumberland had interesting non mainstream films in its array of choices.

In some ways this is good in my books:

1) Toronto can honestly only support so many of these theatres ... but here's a question, I don't know anywhere else in North America that has as many independent theater as Toronto (likely per capita), what's up with that ? I guess when I think about some of the largest North American film festivals:
- Hot Docs.
- Tiff.
- After Dark
... Many more I'm sure ...

Don't forget there's also the relatively new and very large 'underground cinema' on Spadina that opened maybe 1 or 2 years ago ?

Anyway an over saturation means some of places will struggle.

Out of all the locations, in my books this is the best one to close as well for a variety of reasons the most important being I doubt the other locations would be able to quickly turnaround the property like they can in Yorkville implying they'd sit empty for years if not decades.

quite a bounce for an oldish thread....I started reading the comments, thinking to myself...wait a minute...then realized that comments go back 4+ years.

What stores in Vancouver can't open 24/7 except for those in malls or something? If there was a financial incentive to do so, I'm sure they would.

Also, what malls in Seattle open til 10pm?

Biggest Ikea store in North America being built in Montreal

POSTMEDIA NEWS MAY 8, 2012

Slated to open in the summer of 2013, an expanded Ikea store in Montreal will be 469,694 square feet. It will have 54 "inspirational room settings," three full-home settings, a restaurant that sits about 600 people, more than 1,400 parking spaces and a children's play area.

Construction has begun to expand the Montreal Ikea store into the chain's largest outlet in North America, the Swedish retail giant said Tuesday.

Slated to open in the summer of 2013, the store will be 469,694 square feet. Ikea said it will have 54 "inspirational room settings," three full-home settings, a restaurant that sits about 600 people, more than 1,400 parking spaces and a children's play area.

"We are thrilled to have begun building North America's largest store in Montreal," Danielle Plamondon, manager of Ikea's Montreal store, said in a statement. "The new store will offer our loyal Montreal customers an improved shopping experience with more inspiration, more products on hand and more in-store services."

Ikea said it will be taking advantage of new technologies to make the new store 40 per cent more energy efficient than its last wave of stores built in the early 2000s.

Exciting news! It is the only Ikea store I've been to and it seemed big enough to me, so I can't even imagine what it's going to be like after this. The only complaint is that it was in kind of a a longish bus ride from the orange line in a crappy, windswept area that seemed more like what I'd expect to find surrounding Edmonton or Omaha than Montreal

Perhaps one of Toronto's major malls is being redeveloped completely?
