It seems opposite to me. It seems like Earls wanted a certification of beef that they couldn't get from Alberta because Alberta's standards weren't high enough. The free market effect would have been decisions by companies like Earls to put pressure on Alberta beef producers to up their game to meet what the market was demanding. Instead, we have the social media, "trending" meme market winning, along with some sort of misguided overly-nationalistic sentiment.

Not a flip flop on their principles if you read the article:

“We want to make this right. We want Canadian beef back on our menus so we are going to work with local ranchers to build our supply of Alberta beef that meets our criteria.”
Time will tell what this means on the detail level. Sounds like the Alberta beef industry responded more to the market pressures than Earls did.

I don't know what % of Earls revenue comes from Alberta, that could have played into it.

The other aspect - at least from the news - is that Alberta beef ranchers may meet high standards, but don't buy into (pay for) the particular certification system.

(i.e. think green buildings other than LEED)

I'm not too familiar with the beef industry, but I thought there were similar standards in Canada, just not enough suppliers who were signed on to the program to meet Earls' demand.

That could have been it - not enough ranchers signed up to the particular program.

Will be interesting to see if Earl's is going to be paying more for their beef and how higher prices on the menu works into this equation as well. Unless they're going to tell us humane beef costs less to produce?

The US supplier could have easily been less than "normal" beef from Canada, but I suppose we'll never know.

The thing that bothered me the most about this whole story was the kneejerk reaction from Alberta. As if the free market is a bad thing except when it benefits them. What a bunch of whiners.

Looks like Relish isn't opening on the North Shore:

Quote:
Relish Gourmet Burgers’ North Shore project is currently on hold according to a company spokesperson I recently reached through email. The Fredericton, New Brunswick-based burger joint, which boasted some Coming Soon fanfare in a storefront on Lonsdale Avenue earlier this year, is re-evaluating the location and is currently uncertain about future opening plans on this side of town.

I suppose the North Shore’s own Vera’s Burger Shack and Texas-based Mooyah Burgers, Fries and Shakes can hold down the fort for the busy summer burger season ahead.

Vancouver......sigh.

I wish other municipalities will have their first ever roof-top pool-side club, perhaps at Metrotown? Even if it's just a snub at CoV, I will be happy.

If we have some good weather on the holiday weekend coming up it'll just be a little strange to see the bistro all shuttered up. Over the years I've taken various family and friends there after long sight seeing walks and although the food was so so I can't think of a nicer place to park your butt to share a pitcher of beer (or three) and look at the mountains.

^ It's crazy to see the spread of Caliburger. It started in Shanghai, and is now set on taking over the world. I always enjoyed it, but it didn't last here. After two and a half years, all three restaurants closed.

It's an unabashed In N' Out ripoff. Californians will try to tell you that it's nothing like their sacred cow of a restaurant, but that's BS. I had In N' Out as recently as three months ago, and the burgers are almost identical. The animal fries (called cali-style fries at Caliburger) are better at In N' Out though.

If anyone's wondering, it's on the east side of Thurlow Street between Robson and Haro. Here's a pic from a few weeks ago.

Terrible space for a restaurant.

It screams "food stuff".
