^ IIRC she actually asked someone at the city's planning & development department to quietly let it through without the necessary rezoning. In fact I think that was one of the contributing factors to it being discovered and made public before it went too far, when someone with the city blew the whistle at that request.

She was truly mad with power. The best part was hearing the details about the expensive materials she chose and how so much of it was designed specifically for her daughter. Not even Harper was that delusional.

Not to defend the man as a PM/politician, but keep it fair. He was a McDonalds, worn chintz, cardigan kind of guy. Living in palatial digs would not have been his scene in any way, shape or form.

Possibly the only acceptable instance of pink and teal stucco I've seen.

St John's does South Beach. For reasons that defy explanation. Although it certainly strengthens that tropical atmosphere that St John's has long been renowned for.

The merchant class was largely in favour of economic union with the United States during our National Convention and the subsequent referendums. We have a handful - three I believe - purely Art Deco buildings, built largely out of spite regarding how things went (it was an obvious, non-Canadian style).

One of them (Avalon Building) went on to become a CBC headquarters. It's not anymore, but it was.

I believe there are a couple of other "American" buildings, but not in a style obvious enough that they stand out.

SHH, have you considered pursuing a career that would allow you to live off the island for a few months each year?

I've done. I lived away from 1999-2003, and 2005-2012. That's enough. Visits from now on only.

^It's nice. I believe the colours (and maybe even some of the detailing) are actually only a recent addition (from about 10+ years ago), as is part of the actual building. It used to look much more ordinary.

SHH, I doubt the art deco was out of spite, it was just a widely used style at the time. It exists quite commonly in ROC Canada too (e.g. Vancouver City Hall).

3 of my favourite montreal buildings.

The University of Montreal is Canada's finest Art Deco monument. However, it's surroundings, like it's parkinglots, steep curving roads and pedestrian unfriendly access are not very nice. Shame.

Agreed, they need to fix that. Unfortunately, they are very much concentrating on developing their new science campus in Outremont.

The interior was lost to neglect (water infiltration) and a fire (squatters).

130 Galt in Winnipeg - full city block built for an Eaton's printing warehouse. Alexander Ave has such potential if this building was ever repurposed as mixed-use however I believe it is fully occupied.
