its incredibly banal and badly proportioned...a lazy third rate version of so many bridge buildings around the world

the massing of the other clumps of buildings also look like heaps of junky curtain wall

i felt they hired a scientist or engineer to design this, mathematical perfection or sth,

have a lot of science friends, even they can do sth more creative than this
the japanese design refers to the theme of technology, which is rather simple and dull looking, but this is a plaza...public gathering, art, social space

we really need someone like Erickson,

Is there anything new on this project?

I like the fact that it fits my definition of iconic, which doesn't always have to be super tall, but something that should stand out among all the usual towers. I'm a bit surprised about some of the negative comments.

I was at a public meeting of False Creek residents a few weeks ago where the developer (Canadian Metropolitan Properties) announced that the whole project was dead. Perhaps developers make announcements like this often while negotiating with the City, but it seemed sincere. He said that the Aquilinis and his owners were prepared to let it all sit, as is, for as long as necessary.

Edgewater casino extended their lease until 2015, so nothing's gonna happen until they get a new home across the street.

Well doesn't seem like this one will get redeveloped for a while, looks like Concord and CMP are going to head to court. Interesting story so far.

It's basically a dispute involving a Hong Kong tycoon (Concord Pacific) versus a Singaporean tycoon (Canadian Metropolitan) over the latter's right to partner with someone else? Wonder why they partnered up in the first place without first be clear of the legal parameters. For such a huge site, issues would arise but souring of relationship will only hamper this development.

Yeah, pretty much.

The story says Concord sold the lands to Canadian Metropolitan Properties back in 1990 and then they were recently negotiating for Concord to jointly develop the lands.

Concord says they had a binding deal.
Canadian Metropolitan Properties says they didn't have a deal.

I think Concord is looking for monetary damages, since a court wouldn't force the 2 parties to collaborate on a joint development.

Judge declines to dismiss Concord Pacific lawsuit over former Plaza of Nations lands

Keith Fraser
(Vancouver Sun)

Published: February 15, 2017

...

In 1989, Concord Pacific, one of the largest real estate developers in Canada and the owner of the site for the Expo 86 world fair, sold a portion of the site known as the Plaza of Nations for $40 million to Hong Leong Oei, a businessman from Singapore.

Court heard that over the past 25 years, Oei and Terry Hui, the president and CEO of Concord, had had discussions about the possibility of Oei either selling the Plaza land back to Concord or entering into a joint venture to develop the land on the north shore of False Creek.

Concord Pacific Acquisitions Inc., a member of the Concord Pacific Group, alleges in its lawsuit that it entered into one of three alternate but distinct contracts with the defendants, and it seeks to enforce the deal.

Named as defendants in the lawsuit are Oei, Hong Kong Expo Holdings Ltd., which has Oei as its sole shareholder, and Canadian Metropolitan Properties Corp., which has Expo as its sole shareholder.

The contracts allegedly had Concord acquiring a 50-per-cent interest in the Plaza land, which is currently valued at $500 million, with the parties jointly developing the property.

The defendants applied to dismiss the plaintiff’s claim, arguing that despite the fact that there were numerous conflicts in the evidence of the parties that were material, the court could take the plaintiff’s case “at its highest” in weighing that claim. They argued that plaintiff could not succeed on its claim.

The plaintiffs argued in response that it was not open to the court to decide the case on “assumed facts” and said that the defendant’s suggestion that the court decide the issue by taking the plaintiff’s evidence “at its highest” was the wrong approach.

In a ruling released Wednesday, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Peter Voith sided with Concord Pacific.

November Open House Update

I note, happily, that the project has seen an increase in it's FSR.

However, that's where the good news ends. As mentioned, this site is the furthest behind of all the locations; This is no fault of the architect team, as its my understanding that they were handed the project relatively recently. The far juicer rumor I heard is that the owner of the site has no concern about the risk of phasing such large portions in, as they have no intention whatsoever of developing the location themselves.
Rather, the goal is that after the rezoning is complete, they will simply flip the site to another company who will come up with their own design. The drama for this location continues! Again, this is far from gospel and nothing I heard from the applicant team would support it.

Probably a result of favouring the waterside views and minimizing units facing the lights on BC Place.
I wouldn't be surprised if the facades facing BC Place were breezeways and elevator cores, but the towers do seem a bit thick for those.

Agreed, this does seem like a good place for some sidecore services.

Makes much more sense here than at Wall's 498 Drake.

I like how they designed it to frame the center of BC Place from False Creek.

Agreed. Similarly, it's a shame they blocked most of the view of BC place from a such a vantage point as crossing the Cambie Street bridge.

The stadium since is renovation is quite a delight on the skyline, especially with it's lighting features. We are now being left with minimal ways to see it.
