That is what will probably go up on the North/Robie/McCully block - big sale recently of several properties in one transaction.

There's rumours around that Rob Steele continued his buying into that block.

AllNS reported today that is indeed Rob Steele. What a bummer.

Didn't he already buy the whole block? Unless, did he buy more on an adjacent block?

Perhaps he aims to buy up other properties and then close McCully and have one large block of land bounded by North, Robie, May and Agricola except for a few new properties on May.
Bulldoze and build.

5736 MCCULLY ST HALIFAX
2629 ROBIE ST HALIFAX

He couldn't close McCully, of course. He could have a multi-block dealership, though.

I wonder if there's any other city in the country where inner-city houses are being bought up and torn down for a car dealership. What incredible bullshit this is.

If he bought all the properties fronting on McCully he could apply to close McCully and Fern as part of a large new residential and commercial development and move the auto business to another location on less valuable land.

When Canadian Linen Supply relocated from the corner of Robie, West and Garrick St block, O'Regans bought that property and later applied to close Garrick St as it ran through the middle of their consolidated lot. This was approved by Council in the late '90s and now that street is merely a driveway across their land, although they have not limited access to my knowledge. This sounds rather similar.

If Steele has bought the properties on the North St boundary I would be inclined to let him close McCully in return for a strip to widen North St. However that would include the old bank building Fred is located in along with that rather bizarre apartment building with floor plates mid-window that I believe was once a MT&T building.

Good observation. I had no idea that Steeles were into that kind of development, but I guess whatever makes money.

It would seem kind of strange to relocate the dealership after it was extensively renovated just a few years ago, and he likely paid for that, however it does seem like the value of the land is only going to increase to the point that it would be too valuable to waste on a car lot.

That said, the renovations would probably be pocket change compared to a project this large, and the dealership franchise would likely be more lucrative in a better location.

Would there be any benefit to widening North street for only one block?

One block at a time as opportunity presents itself is still better than the existing cartpath. Actually if you can get it widened from the bridge to Robie (the Agricola-Robie block here plus a couple more eastbound to Northwood Terrace), eventually Robie itself will get dealt with since there is only a short stretch of that which is bottlenecked.

That's not going to happen. There are dozens of properties along that stretch, many owned by homeowners, some purchased and seriously renovated in recent years, Tearing them all down to build a wider road would be absurd and hugely damaging to the neighbourhood. We don't build highways through neighbourhoods anymore.

Where does this frenzy for road-widening come from? Geez.

As for Rob Steele, if this is about a property development fronting North, fine. If it's about tearing down everything between McCully and North to expand his car dealership, that's outrageous.

They who shall not be named say this is purely to expand the Honda dealership.

To front North Street with his dealership, and tear down a few dozen houses? Holy hell.
