Dan - Is this present boom still the biggest if you removed NYC?
If you remove NYC from the over 500+ foot | 150+ m tall towers currently under construction in the US you are still left with 58 towers U/C across the nation at that height or taller.

Miami & Chicago alone would account for 30% of that total now.

When was the last time we had 15 American cities outside of NYC simultaneously building towers over 500+ feet ?

As Steely dan said :

"i don't think the US has ever had 98 500+ footers U/C at the same time."

This is by far the largest boom in decades. Not eclipsing the era in the 20's and 1945-1959, but in terms of height, and supertalls, yes. It's been steady as well since 2011/12. 4-5 years of tremendous and hyyyuuuuuuge ( ) growth.

From Texas to Florida to NY to Seattle and so on, there have been quite some transformations to major city skylines.

Volume wise, NY takes the cake, with Miami (and its suburbs) second.

Texas has been on the ball for the current real estate cycle. Whats going on in Texas looks promising.

Its just been tremendous. Did I forget to mention say tremendous?! I just hope the boom is tremendous for the next 4 years.

no. again, if we're talking about 500+ footers and supertalls, there was no time in the '70s or '80s or '20s or any other time in the entire history of our nation where more of those types of buildings were under construction simultaneously than what is taking place right now.

the title of this thread is true.

right. freaking. now. is the biggest skyscraper building boom in US history.

it's happening right now guys, and we get to live though it!

the entire time frame of 1920 - 1935 only produced 2 supertalls and 58 500+ footers in the US. that's for that entire 15 year time span. it was a significant skyscraper building boom, for sure, but there's WAY more than that U/C just right now. who knows how insane shit will get 10 or 15 years out from now?

and 1945-1959 was hardly a skyscraper building boom for the US at all. that span produced zero supertalls and only a paltry 10 500+ footers.

But yes, in terms of height, your right (500+ ft). I should of revised that to mention general construction activity; not height. Globally, 2000-2016 has seen a massive rise in super tall.

This has also been true for the U.S., with 2014 upwards seeing a big increase.

Places like SF for example have changed a lot in the last 10 years. Even Chicago. 2005 vs now.

Nearly two years on and I'm wondering how this is looking. Are we still maintaining a massive pace? Sure feels like it some places.

I made a graph trying to visualize this. It's interesting to see the booms and busts in the past. 3 lines, blue is the total number built that year (500 ft minimum), red is NYC alone, and yellow is 1000 footers. All data is straight from SSP's database. I expect the future years won't be quite as dramatic as construction is unpredictable, but we are certainly poised to add a lot in the coming years.

Let me know if you have any questions!
