WEST VIRGINIA - SSP'ers weekend in the Mountaineer State

Last summer, glowrock, photolith and I took a journey from Pittsburgh to West Virginia.

A good portion of this is in Charleston, but we hit a number of places from Hawks Nest State Park, New River Gorge and Lewisburg (not pictures, which I did not have my camera, for some reason).

A little more nature than a lot of SSP threads are used to. Charleston starts at #40.

Excellent pics!! I've lost count how many times I've passed through Charleston to visit Oak Hill where my dad grew up!! I hope Charleston's worst days are behind it. As for the New River, I have rafted several times down the New River and the Gauley. You can't beat that!!

I love the mixture between nature and civilization, it´s a perfect combination. The landscapes are fabulous!

Thanks for sharing and greetings from Madrid, Spain.

Nice pictures. Charleston looks a little like a Pennsylvania town, which makes sense, but it also has its own feel, which makes sense as well. It looks like it has some nice commercial stock.

No Weirton or Wheeling?

Charleston looks nice if not a little sparse.

Nope, and no Parkersburg or Huntington. But we covered a lot of ground for a weekend.

I saw Wheeling from I-70 going back to Pittsburgh from Columbus a few days later though. Haven't been on the ground in the town. But, since these were shot, I have moved to just three hours or so west of there. So it's likely to get covered at some point.

If you ever have time...Go back to southern WV to a little town called Welch. One of the largest building stocks for a small town of 1,500!!

Must've been an amazing weekend with a crew like that exploring Weird and Wild West Virginia.

I've been obsessed with the idea of vacationing in Welch for some time now.

I've still at least one, maybe even two threads worth of Pittsburgh left, including an excursion to Carrie Furnace with Litherland drinking ambient-temperature Keystone while hiking across old railroad tracks and whatnot. I ended up falling on my ass and losing my sunglasses I'd just bought, but better that than the camera and kinda-expensive lens. Great times.

I also did not have my camera when we were in downtown Beckley (which is not particularly remarkable, Lewisburg and Charleston blew it away. I think there must have been a fire or something that took out a lot of buildings, because you have old commercial buildings that suddenly give way to a memorial park that, for some reason, had a chunk of steel from the World Trade Center in it. No visible context (i.e. so-and-so from Beckley was on the plane, and this park is dedicated to their memory), just a marker that says this is WTC steel and it's OK to touch it.

I like that tourist trap near Beckley that you featured in your photography.

Yes, that's Tamarack, "The Best of West Virginia." Cool place, can look right in at the glass blowing shop.
