Delhi's Presidential Estate is now a smart city
Quote:
NEW DELHI: Rashtrapati Bhavan has partnered with IBM to transform the Presidential Estate into a smart township . IBM has setup an Intelligent Operations Center (IOC) to monitor and enhance the efficiency of critical infrastructure and utilities at Presidential Estate spread across 330 acres of land.
Quote:
The company has integrated its IOC system with electrical billing system. Data on consumption patterns of consumers, public and common areas, within the estate, are being collected to optimize energy management.

The water management at the estate relied heavily on manual intelligence. IBM has mapped all water domain assets such as underground water reservoirs, pump locations and tube well assets. The entire water distribution pipeline was mapped on a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) layer. Through IBM IOC system, the company aims to provide accurate information about the distribution network. This will enable faster diagnostic and resolution of water incidents.

The system also maps waste management, starting from waste bin collections, rickshaw routes, disposals, landfill, and processing. The mobile app platform also assists teams that maintain cleanliness in the area.

Ahmedabad: Smoke detected in Smart City plan
Quote:
Ahmedabad: It turns out that life in the proposed Smart City of Ahmedabad may be perilously flammable. According to research carried out by a CEPT University student, fire emergency services in the city lack advanced equipment and face staff shortage. Moreover, the non-strategic locations of fire stations increase response times in emergencies.

According to the study, on the fire hazard scale of 1 to 10, Ahmedabad scores 9, which means "very high" risk. M F Dastoor, the chief fire officer of the AMC, says that staff shortage is indeed a problem, but doesn't accept the contention that advanced technology will enhance the efficiency of fire emergency services.

MSMEs from cities included in Smart City Mission hopeful of getting boost
Quote:
“MSMEs won’t get benefited here. People are discouraging the MSMEs here; they don’t want industries to be here. Smart Cities or any other initiative would be successful only if the industries grow. But here, the MSMEs are finished. The government wants the MSMEs to move out of the city rather manufacturing activity and get into trading or services,” Aggarwal added.
What type of walk-to-work concept they are encouraging?

Odisha: Bhubaneswar Smart City Proposal wins prestigious Canadian design award
Quote:
The international jury has viewed the Smart City Proposal of Bhubaneswar as an excellent example of a model of sustainable urbanization that has the transformative potential to provide citizens with prosperity, safety, and equity.
Quote:
It can be mentioned here that the Smart City Proposal of Bhubaneswar was unique for its inclusiveness with inputs from children, women, social service organisations, elderly, physically challenged and transgender. It has also used the social media tools to its maximum capacity for gaining the people’s verdict in choosing the priority areas and also selecting the smart city district and pan-city solutions.

While the smart district will include development of an area of 985 acres between Bapuji Nagar and Saheed Nagar having several important project components, the pan-city proposal will include state-of-the-art integrated City Operation and Management Centre (ICOMC).

The smart district, called as the Bhubaneswar Town Centre District will have several focus area like transit oriented development, financial sustainability, world-class infrastructure, socio-economic development, mixed land use pattern and its cost will be Rs 4,095 crore.

Similarly, the ICOMC will have leading components like efficient traffic management, parking, transit operation, common payment card and 24X7 surveillance, emergency response and city incident management system. The pan-city proposal will cost Rs 442 crore. The entire proposal will cost Rs 4,537 crore.

The uniqueness of the Bhubaneswar Smart City Plan is that it played a pivotal role in redefining existing planning processes for developing countries. The focus is on transitioning from conventional urban spatial planning to prioritization of solutions based on the “three-legged” approach adopted from the New Urban Agenda of Habitat III, formally known as the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development - legal systems, urban planning, and local fiscal systems.

Centre to launch portal for smart cities
Quote:
Navadha Pandey

New Delhi, June 9:

The Ministry of Urban Development will launch a new portal, SmartNet, to aid the development of smart cities under the government’s flagship mission.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to launch SmartNet on the first anniversary of the smart city mission on June 24,” a senior official in the Ministry said.

High-tech platform

The initiative is aimed at developing a platform for communication among cities, academia, researchers and technologists and creating an ecosystem of learning and disseminating information among city managers and stakeholders in urban transformation.

“SmartNet will become the primary portal for government to government; government to business; and business to government linkages for the urban sector in India,” the source said, adding that it will offer real time data for all cities.

Eventually, the ministry also wants SmartNet to become the preferred mechanism for knowledge sharing between the smart cities and cities under other missions such as AMRUT, HRIDAY, Swachch Bharat and Housing for All.

‘Urban Training Calendar’

SmartNet will showcase benchmarked cases and best practice documentations, model RFP documents, financial models and business cases, land monetisation ideas, SPV structures and innovative practices and risk mitigation techniques, etc.

An ‘Urban Training Calendar’ will have information on city-level events being organised by urban local bodies and smart city SPVs. In order to enhance learning opportunities, the National Institute of Urban Affairs will launch its first course on ‘Sustainable Urban Land Use’, apart from new courses contributed by various agencies in India and abroad.

SmartNet will also host an Open Source Software Library, which will showcase apps developed during the smart city challenge phase and will highlight any new open source software being developed by mission cities during the execution phase.

Bengaluru: ‘Smart mobility a far cry as city fails to keep pace with technology’
Quote:
The delay in embracing technology is what is preventing the city from having smart mobility. For example, BMTC, which ferries 55 lakh commuters every day, has introduced the Intelligent Transport System (ITS). While it allows BMTC to track buses and provide information to users, the installation of GPS devices, a yesteryear technology which has been replaced by GPS-enabled systems like mobiles (which are much cheaper), has not only added to the cost but also limited uses.

Prioritising aesthetics: Cities need to be ‘art smart’
Quote:
Art master plans world over

The Public Art Master Plan in city of San Diego in California makes a commitment to sustaining a vibrant cultural life by establishing, by policy, a discretionary City Council appropriation consisting of 2 per cent of selected eligible Capital Improvement Project budgets for public art, requiring, by ordinance, a 1 per cent set-aside for public art enhancement in private development. It provides support systems for local artists who work in the City’s Public Art Program to enhance the City’s urban design objectives by using public art to animate the city’s public spaces.

Similarly, the Kingston Public Art Master Plan in Canada aims to provide a framework needed to develop and maintain public art within a municipal context and support activity in the community and create consistent standards for public art in public realm, civic initiatives and private sector projects. The consultation process for the Public Art Master Plan involved 15 City staff in 6 departments, 13 external arts, design and development stakeholders, 100 attendees at the Public Art Forum, 8 local artists making 5 interventions across Kingston that engaged more than 3000 people, 300 children plus their caregivers at Art Zoo and 217 respondents to the public survey!

Why smart cities need smart citizens
Creating Synergy: ‘Smart citizens to be a crucial part of Smart City plan’

Smart cities can’t do without smart citizens
Quote:
For example, energy saving cannot be achieved merely by installing smart meters in housing units. In order to reduce energy consumption and save money on bills, consumers need to not only monitor their energy use but also make an effort to change the whole family’s daily energy usage behaviour. This would include shifting to energy-efficient appliances, reducing TV time and switching off electrical appliances when not in use, especially during peak periods.
