Looks like the core sciences building is going to be the tallest and biggest on campus. I heard its design was inspired by icebergs. haha.

I quite like the new building design actually. I agree the campus style is all over the place, and the highway down the middle ruins campus life to an extent, but as a former researcher in the old Science building, I am excited for the current staff, faculty and students to have proper facilities in which to do their work.

I like this proposal but is there still any sort of market left in St John's for condos?

^That's what I was thinking yesterday. I don't have any faith in the condo market, especially at this point where the economy is in a downturn. Apartments would be a better idea (though the apartment stigma in St. John's is another battle)

I can't quite wrap my head around that design for that location, this is not going to get through the process without some serious opposition. The heritage experts panel has requested to meet with the developer to suggest design changes and I expect the local residents to come out with guns a blazin'.

On another note, the last time I searched condo listing for St. John's there 207 for sale!!! Don't expect to see this one anytime soon.

I think there is always some market for condos, a certain demographic will just prefer it for various lifestyle reasons regardless of short term investment value. If there is going to be such a market, it will invariably be based on location, most likely downtown or central, as opposed to more isolated or suburban areas.

The design is basically modern, pretty safe for 2016 (your basic German Bauhaus design from the 1930s), my biggest criticism would be it's lack of colour.

Too modern?: City sends St. John's condo proposal back to drawing board

Well, that was short-lived!

The City of St. John's is asking a residential developer to rethink a downtown condo proposal, as the current design looks a bit too "modern."

A submission by developer Commander Ventures for a 12-unit condo near Duckworth Street will head back to the city's heritage panel for discussion and direction before coming to a vote.

With its grey-and-white accents, protruding windows and "busy facade," city staff say the proposal at 21 Holloway Street doesn't fit in with the rest of the neighbourhood, in a briefing provided to councillors at Monday's city council meeting.

Short answer would be no.

Long answer would be more nuanced. As Architype mentioned, they are bound to appeal to a certain demographic. $500,000 condos in downtown St. John's have been done and there is no market for them. However, the market right now heavily favours first time home buyers. Over 50% of sales are between $200,000 and $300,000. Quantity of purchases are actually up year-over-year, but the units that are being purchased are significantly cheaper.

One and two bedroom condos downtown that aim to attract young people looking for an urban life style, at an under $300K price point, would sell I think. The problem right now is that the market is flooded with $500,000 downtown properties or $350,000 condos in Airport Heights and Topsail Road. Neither of these meet the actual demand, which is first time buyers in an urban environment.

That said, the immediate opposition to this design is a bummer and will probably hold up the development. Based on the size and the remaining work they have to do with the City just to get this approved I don't expect that units could conceivably begin being closed until 2018/2019. So hard to say where demand will be then.

It seems that the Alt Hotel proposal is just as modern. What am I missing here?

As I said in my post above, the style they are calling too modern is actually based on 1930s German Bauhaus. It's time to take a broader view of the world of design. Fake heritage style buildings don't really make sense in new construction. Even though, the article made it sound like it's only a suggestion, chances are what they want could turn out to be terrible.

I'm confused about the rational as well, because of the Alt Hotel proposal, and agree with what someone else said that they would complement one another, perhaps.

The argument that "this is something for mainland Canada, we are special" is totally bogus.
