Houston often gets a bad rap for being too sprawling and not having that great of a downtown for its size, being 4th largest and all in the U.S. Well, its just not true, H town has an amazing downtown, well parts of it at least. It has gotten a hell of a lot better in recent years, especially with the completion of a new park downtown, Discovery Green.

The Rice Hotel sits at the location of the first capital of the Republic of Texas before it was moved to Washington on the Brazos and then to Austin
Half of this building was washed away in the 30s when the Bayou flooded and just recently it has been renovated.
The oldest surviving building in Houston, built in 1861 I believe. So many historic buildings have been destroyed downtown to the point where there are hardly any left. Thats why there are so many damned parking lots still.

Houston is on the brink of a massive change for its downtown and with new initiatives to make downtown Houston define Houston and not its suburbs it will become a world class city. Compared to what it was like 10 years ago downtown is a hundred times better. In ten more years it will be 1000 times better than it is today. I remember when I first moved there and my family and I would go downtown to see a show and there would be not a soul on the streets but now at night there are actually people walking around! It will only get better in the future.
