Houston is SEXIER than you think

Houston often gets a bad rap for being too sprawling and not having that great of a downtown for its size, being 4th largest and all in the U.S. Well, its just not true, H town has an amazing downtown, well parts of it at least. It has gotten a hell of a lot better in recent years, especially with the completion of a new park downtown, Discovery Green.

The following are photos I have taken, most were from last Thursday, a few were from years ago when I lived there full time. Enjoy...

North side of town crossing over Buffalo Bayou

The underground tunnel system is quite extensive in Houston and its the reason why the street level seems so dead all of the time.

The ugly on the outside stunning on the inside Pennzoil Place Tower.

Skydeck of the JP Morgan Chase Tower

The reason Houston exists, Buffalo Bayou.

Parking lots galore

The Rice Hotel sits at the location of the first capital of the Republic of Texas before it was moved to Washington on the Brazos and then to Austin

Half of this building was washed away in the 30s when the Bayou flooded and just recently it has been renovated.

The oldest surviving building in Houston, built in 1861 I believe. So many historic buildings have been destroyed downtown to the point where there are hardly any left. Thats why there are so many damned parking lots still.

The Medical Center

Uptown skyline

Can Jesus really save me from an eternity in hell!!!!???

The former Enron Stadium

The former Enron building

The Ship Channel and the coffee factory

The YMCA building

The beautiful Gulf Building, now JP Morgan Chase building

Gulf Building interior

The beautiful art deco building on the left will most likely be torn down due to fn neglect, like so many historic H town buildings.

From the Cotton Exchange Building

Not a one of these buildings are permanently protected. There are ONLY 8 buildings downtown that are permanently protected.

midtown from downtown

Tallest building in Tejas

Giant rally that was held downtown last Thursday, thousands upon thousands of Muslims were there

Main Place is rising

Discovery Green is doing wonders for the east side of downtown

Bank of America Center by Phillip Johnson; love it!

This better be your computers new background!

My dogs are tired from all of that walking; heading home on the metro rail

Houston is on the brink of a massive change for its downtown and with new initiatives to make downtown Houston define Houston and not its suburbs it will become a world class city. Compared to what it was like 10 years ago downtown is a hundred times better. In ten more years it will be 1000 times better than it is today. I remember when I first moved there and my family and I would go downtown to see a show and there would be not a soul on the streets but now at night there are actually people walking around! It will only get better in the future.

Mostly the suburbs unfortunately. There are a few lofts and apartments downtown plus one almost finished apartment tower. Altogether in a few years downtown might have 2000 people living there. Its kinda pathetic but whatever.

The expanse of parking lots is a shame but Houston has still has some nice architecture. Amazing photos!

the two zipcodes that make up downtown houston are 77010 and 77002. both zipcodes make up an area of two square miles and have a population of around 15,000. i do not know where the 2000 number came from.

Awesome pics! I love this building, the contrast with old/new and broken/fixed, it's just pure genius.

I was very impressed with Houston myself when I was there this summer, so, it does deserve some credit. And your photos definitely do that! Thanks!!

I had heard a few years ago that downtown had a pop of 2000 but I just looked at the official downtown website and it says that downtown has a population of 3,800 as of 2005, so its probably at about 4,200 now. Downtown is everything within the confines of the inner loop. By 2025 they are working for a population of 20,000 downtown.

Most of the 77002 population is outside of downtown in Midtown on the fringes and along the Main St. corridor. 4000 is probably accurate imo.

Is Houston relatively safe? What are the bad areas?

Yeah, just stay out of the ghettos, like in every city. Downtown is very safe, I never feel threatened walking around. The hobos are kinda bothersome just because they outnumber the pedestrians at certain times of the day. But as Houston keeps gaining population downtown this will be less of a problem.

Only if you include the smaller neighborhoods nearby, and isn't there a university in Downtown Indy (or near it)? And the people mostly live in the suburbs, but that's true for most cities. The main city does not usually hold the majority of the metro population. Also, Houston's Inner Loop has 500,000+ people (at 95 square miles). Not that dense, but it's what I'd consider the real Houston.
