I finally figured out why they used such horrible cladding -- it was the leftover material from Claridge Tribeca!

Hey, Tribeca doesn't look anywhere near as bad as this monstrosity. Nothing constructed in Ottawa in the last 20 years looks as bad as this monstrosity.

TriBeCa was designed with that material in mind. This was just thrown on in an attempt to dump the remaining stock. They did the same with the LeBreton Yellow brick. Notice how TriBeCa East uses it for the bottom third of the tower.

'Culturally rich' Ottawa the right spot for Andaz's Canadian debut, hotel chain says

By Jacob Serebrin , OBJ Contributor
Published on September 01, 2016

Cultural vibrancy – and the high number of visitors to the city – are what attracted boutique hotel brand Andaz to Ottawa.

“Andaz works best in vibrant, locally-focused, culturally rich communities and we feel like Ottawa is all those things,” says Matt Graham, the general manager of the Andaz Ottawa ByWard Market.

The hotel, which opened on Aug. 22, is the first Andaz-branded hotel in Canada.

“We hope that the brand will get a certain amount of larger representation being in the national capital, where you have those international folks coming in and also Canadians coming in,” Mr. Graham says. “That demonstrates that this is a really smart place to launch the brand in this country.”

He says the timing of the hotel’s opening was planned with the events around the 150th anniversary of Confederation – and the rest of the Ottawa 2017 celebrations in mind.

“I think the project was going to happen anyways,” Mr. Graham says. “But it made having the hotel open for it important.”

Those events – particularly the Canada Day celebrations – are already attracting inquiries.

The Andaz brand, developed by Hyatt brand, aims to give visitors a more local feel, Mr. Graham says.

“When you stay with a friend, they recommend the coffee shop that they use, they serve food from the local market. That’s kind of what we’re trying to convey to people who stay at the hotel,” he says.

Food served at the hotel is sourced locally, while the artwork comes from the Art Bank of Canada, he says.

Even the soaps in the bathroom and the beer, soft drinks and chocolate in the minibar come from local companies, Mr. Graham says.

“Oftentimes at a hotel, things like the bath amenities are the same across the chain, whereas we’re trying to appeal to that person that wants to experience the destination at a bit deeper level and so by using these local products, we’re able to achieve that,” he says.

The hotel’s local connection also includes monthly “salons,” Mr. Graham says.

“An Andaz salon is best-described as an open house where we partner with someone doing something culturally interesting in the community. It could be fashion, it could be theatre, it could be art, it could be music, it could be a farmer or a brewer,” he says. "The individual comes into the hotel and talks about what they do."

The events are open to the public as well as hotel guests, and there’s no admission fee.

Mr. Graham says it’s another way the hotel aims to show Ottawa off to his guests and to make visiting the hotel a bit more like visiting a friend than staying at a hotel.

Perhaps now that the building is done and the hotel is open for business, it's time to close this thread. I think nearly all agree that the building is ugly: a missed opportunity for the Market area and downtown Ottawa. But we're stuck with it. All we can do is hope that (someday) it'll get reclad, though I probably won't get to see that day.

Apparently Andaz is Hyatt's brand for "upscale lifestyle boutique-style hotels".
Huh. That's not how I would imagine upscale boutique hotel to look like.

I spend north of 40 nights per year in hotels. The cladding of the building is always a top priority of mine, as I'm sure it is to hotel guests in general.

I really enjoyed the rooftop patio here a few nights ago. The view truly can't be beat!

I always check the CladdingScore™ on Tripadvisor prior to booking.

Updated with Phase 1 complete. Haven't seen any news on Phase 2 yet.

Would have been fine as a Holiday Inn, but it is an embarrassment as an Andaz.

It would be fine in Kanata on a 5-acre lot, where no one would care what it looks like, and we wouldn't be stuck looking at it in a prime historic neighbourhood for decades to come.

They signed off on the initial concept. Not sure they knew what the end product would look like. This would explain the delay in construction (negotiations for a better price perhaps).

My bad. Would have been fine off the Queensway in suburbia.

Wrong. Hyatt had a corporate project manager here throughout signing off, including final.

Looks like the second phase is on hold for a bit. Claridge has applied to make it a temporary parking lot for 3 years or "until the development of the approved 22-storey mixed-use building on the site proceeds."

Yes, nothing matters more. In fact, I rebooked my last trip to Mexico because the villas in the resort had the wrong colour of stucco. It was too pinky-orange, so we rebooked at a different one down the coast that was more orangey-pink. It cost about $200 more, but it was worth it not to be forced, probably at gunpoint, to look at the wrong shade of stucco for eight days.
