CN Tower walk will put visitors on edge

CN Tower walk will put visitors on edge

Quote:
The CN Tower will add a new attraction this year that could make bungee jumping look like a walk in the park. The tower’s new EdgeWalk will allow thrill-seekers to stroll outside on the world-famous tower on a 1.5 metre ledge that rings the main pod 356 metres (1,168 feet) above the ground.

Opening in August, this walk of wobbly knees will send groups of six to eight people out on the ledge where they will walk hands-free while attached to an overhead safety harness. During the walk, specially trained guides will encourage visitors to push their personal limits, even allowing them to lean out 116 storeys above the city. Reports say the EdgeWalk will cost $175. While that may be pricey, CN Tower staff say it won’t cost walkers their lives.

CN Tower going the way of Stratosphere in Vegas.

Not that it's a bad thing, though. Both have been tourist traps since the very beginning, and tourism brings money to the city and joy to thousands of visitors. Last but not least, the whole thing looks fun as hell.

That rendering alone’s giving m vertigo. I could barely handle the transparent floors—and I’m not typically afraid of heights!

if 175 was chum change for me i would totally dooo it! it looks so fun! i imagine everyone is tied together to prevent that 'one' who tries to do something stupid. those hanging ropes probably won't be long enough to actually let people peer over the edge. i mean, 1.5 meters sounds small, but it's nearly 5 feet.

the price is so high because the attraction itself is so low volume that if they charged $50, they would have 2 hour line ups for it constantly. it can only handle 4 or 5 people at a time by the looks of it, and i'm guessing that it would take at least 20 minutes to set everyone up and to actually walk around the cn tower.

ks interesting and downright scary. Too intense for me. Although, I'm not sure if I buy the argument that it makes bungee jumping a walk in the park as the article states, though.

Kinda pricey, but I'm giving it some serious thought. It opens just in time for my trip to Toronto in August.

A view of the construction:

Here's a link to the CN Tower site:

http://www.cntower.ca/en-Ca/Home.html

And all the information:

Quote:
TORONTO, ON, May 9 2011 – Today, Canada’s National Tower announced the imminent opening of its new extreme attraction, EdgeWalk at the CN Tower. The first of its kind in North America, EdgeWalk is the world’s highest full circle hands-free walk on a 5 ft (1.5 m) wide ledge encircling the top of the CN Tower’s main pod, 356m, (1168 ft , 116 stories) above the ground. This adrenalin-fueled experience will allow thrill seekers to walk the edge of one of the world’s greatest man-made wonders beginning summer 2011.

“We think it’s fitting that Toronto’s newest attraction in 18 years should be at the city’s most defining landmark,” said Mark Laroche, President and CEO, Canada Lands Company, Owner and Operator of the CN Tower. “EdgeWalk is both thrilling and unique and will push visitors to their limits – literally and figuratively. This will be among Toronto’s, if not the world’s, greatest attractions.”

Adventure lovers will walk “hands-free” in groups of six to eight, while attached to an overhead safety rail via a trolley and harness system. Trained EdgeWalk guides will encourage visitors to push their personal limits, allowing those who dare to lean back over Toronto, with nothing but air beneath them. Everyone who meets the stipulated requirements (height and weight parameters) will be welcome to experience these breathtaking open-air views of Toronto and Lake Ontario.

“During our 35th anniversary year we are excited to introduce visitors to the most exciting attraction in our history,” said Jack Robinson, COO, CN Tower. “We’re extremely proud of the records the CN Tower has held throughout the years, including our strong safety record. Our facilities and engineering team supervised the EdgeWalk project design and build to ensure that it is both exciting and safe.”

Every aspect of EdgeWalk, from design, to build, to attraction logistics and operation has been developed with the utmost safety and security in mind. The entire experience will run 1.5 hours, with the walk itself lasting between 20 to 30 minutes.

EdgeWalk at the CN Tower will open to the public in summer 2011, with advanced ticket sales beginning by phone in June. Further information about tickets and pricing will follow. www.edgewalkcntower.ca

If they're going this far, they might as well legalize base jumping off of it. Just pay a huge fee and sign a waiver that makes you responsible for your landing. I'd rather pay for that than just standing on the ledge.
