When B.C. government pot shops open, they’ll carry more than 150 kinds of weed

When B.C. government pot shops open, they’ll carry more than 150 kinds of weed

A wide variety of alcohol can be found at B.C. liquor stores, from cheap swill to expensive spirits.

This fall, when BC Cannabis Stores open, pot consumers will also have a massive selection to choose from.

On Wednesday, the BC Liquor Distribution Branch said only quality cannabis will be sold at its cannabis stores, thanks to a series of agreements with 31 licensed producers.

The LDB said the “initial product assortment will feature more than 150 strains, ranging in quality, from value to ultra-premium product, at competitive prices.”

“We are thrilled to be reaching this significant milestone in developing a competitive wholesale assortment for non-medical cannabis,” said LDB general manager and CEO Blain Lawson.

“The volume, variety and quality of our product assortment speak to the LDB’s commitment to working towards eliminating the illicit market.”

The LDB also announced Wednesday that it will have an array of cannabis accessories for retail sale at its cannabis stores, and that the first cannabis store opening will take place at the Columbia Place Shopping Centre in Kamloops.

According to the LDB, the store will have approximately 20 employees.

The federal government will legalize marijuana on Oct. 17.

“We welcome this announcement that the LDB is applying to open the first government-operated BC Cannabis Store in Kamloops,” Mayor Ken Christian said.

“Kamloops City Council supports the work of the provincial government as they map out the future retail cannabis landscape in B.C.

“Their mixed model for cannabis sales, allowing both public and private retail, has many benefits to B.C. communities. The proposal, like all applications, will require the city’s approval before it will operate.”

Boy's Co closing their Robson Street store and re-locating flagship to Coquitlam Centre. I'll miss this store, shopped there lots over the years, they offered a great variety of brands not offered elsewhere downtown.

Interesting how life is moving further East.

Even retail is following.

People must be getting tired of the ocean and mountain views.

Maybe people should finally accept the fact that downtown retail is failing because of a lack of good retail space, and that building height limits are making owners of the few low-density retail spaces charge tenants at exorbitant rates.

If retailing is really that bad, retailers like Boy's Co will not shut down the downtown store and then relocate it to a mall in the burbs. They will just shut down completely.

The City has to rethink their zoning approach to developments along Robson, Granville, Davie and Denman, or risk retail businesses to suffer even more. If they don't, sooner or later all stores are going to be taken over by marijuana dispensaries. What a rundown unimaginative city!

I think with Boys'co most of what they sell is easily found at nearby stores like Nordstrom, Holt Renfrew etc. Whereas it's a lot harder to come by in the suburbs and that drives up sales in their suburb store locations.

The article doesn't say if they had to move out to make way for a demolition or anything, they are just leaving the space or will it be redeveloped any inside info?

Speaking of Coquitlam Centre...
The gap at Coquitlam Centre is closing up, the store was really busy, everything is 30-50% off plus another 15% off.

I don't think Nordstrom is the reason why Boy's Co is closing. Many other city centres in the world can have numerous department stores and at the same time support many types of cross-over boutique/fashion retail.

Could this be the real reason for the retail business closures?
https://globalnews.ca/news/3924007/r...-tax-increase/

No matter what, it's the City's fault, that I'm very certain. Instead of letting zoning policies evolve and updating them, allowing more businesses to set up downtown, and charging lower taxes on each business to meet their tax base, the City is forever increasing business taxes and let them rise unchecked, and at the same time refusing to increase the current stock of retail space.

yeah, no i don't think its competition but if your customer base is in the suburbs these days that's where you open

They still have their original oakridge store

I remember shopping there in the 80's for edwin jeans

The Post/Boys'Co Robson

QuadReal provided us with new renderings as well as an exclusive interview re: The Post in downtown Vancouver: https://www.retail-insider.com/retai...sive-interview

Amazon might occupy even more than initially stated, including surrounding properties (stay tuned).

Re: Boys'Co, there will be a considerable amount of excitement amongst a younger demographic when the Robson Boys'Co replacement tenant is announced. It's interesting to see how music inspires fashion.

Gap (and Gap Kids) are apparently moving into the old Best Buy building across Pinetree from Coquitlam Centre. Then again I've heard that Old Navy is moving in there too. Maybe all three are...?

Nice to see how building a new mall, or in the this case, converting an old warehouse into a mall, can get us a few nice things that our relatively backward downtown doesn't have. Toronto already has a few large food halls, like Marche and Richtree, and it's about time Vancouver gets something similar, and I'm glad Quadreal is trying to bring in one.

Too bad there won't be enough retail space at The Post for Uniqlo or Simons to enter the downtown market too.

Is it sensible to assume the Post grocery store will be a Whole Foods? Also should we expect an Amazon Go?

Sounds like Robson is getting one of Drake’s OVO stores?

Article from a few weeks ago:

Quote:
The Metrotown Muji will be expanded further by annexing 4,535 square feet of retail space, which includes merging three separate spaces surrounding the existing store.

Muji says that it will reveal new services and products to be carried at the store at a later date, with an opening set for the fall of 2018. The goal is to replicate the flagship Robson Street store experience both in product selection and retail footprint.

I would think Whole Foods.
Amazon Go is more for grab and go for office workers.

I guess it depends on target market.
Whole Foods may be a bit too high end for being on the edge of the Victory Square area (but still far from DTES) - most customers would come from Spectrum and from condos to the south.

Whole Foods also attracts a large lunch and quick meal marketshare through their salad/hot bars plus all of the grab-and-go.
