A couple reasons why Canada's cities grow faster in their urban core than most American cities is because the crime is way less, the inner city schools are better, and the cost of living is lower in some of those cities.

crime is not WAY less, inner city schools are not WAY better, and the cost of living is not LOWER.....it is a mindset where in Canada people enjoy living somewhat more centrally where as the US is all about suburbs, the american dream, and a white picket fence.

Other than a few exceptions, US cities are about suburban living....with the core only being for employment or to watch a prof. sports team.

I would say mindset over your rational.....but dont get me wrong, Canada has its suburban probs too in many cities.

If cost of living is lower typically you will see more suburbs rather than condos downtown so that argument is out.

but it is interesting how CDN cities versus US cities develop.

I've always joked that Canadian cities are so dense because their citizens are huddled together for warmth. Great list for Edmonton.

Cold, can you please update Edmonton's population figures to that of 2006 (see my sig below)?

Oh, and "Strathern" should be spelled Strathearn.

I know, I'm in a nit-picking mood today.

And fix the spacing - not sure how that happened when I emailed you - but all those extra spaces arent supposed to be there either. Too bad I can't edit your post.
