wow, I've floated parts of the Payette but that was extreme. No need for a man-made whitewater park there. It mentioned that it is at record high-level flows. I've heard that when the water is high it actually smooths out the rapids more than when the water is low and the rocks are more pronounced.

IDAHO SHOWS WELL AT WINE SUMMIT

Idaho wineries brought home 47 medals at this year's Northwest Wine Summit, held in Seattle.

Idaho went up against wines from Oregon, Washington and British Columbia and won nine gold, 17 silver and 20 bronze awards out of a field of more than 1,100 wines and some of the best in the region.

Some highlights:

Cinder winemaker Melanie Kraus won four medals, taking the top prize with Best of Region with her 2009 Viognier.

Other golds were won by Fraser Vineyard's 2009 Viognier; Hell's Canyon's 2004 Cabernet Reserve and 2006 Merlot Reserve; Indian Creek 2009 Chardonnay and Viognier (Indian Creek took home a total of 10 medals); Koenig Vineyards for 2008 Riesling Ice Wine; Pend d'Oreille Winery for its 2008 Viognier; and Vale Wine Co. for its 2008 Syrah.

Other winning wineries were Colter's Creek Winery, Frenchman's Gulch, Snyder Winery and Woodriver Cellars. For a complete list of winners, follow the links atIdahoStatesman.com.

Idaho, Utah indicate concealed weapons permits are on the rise

Figures indicate that more Americans like Johnson are seeking permission to carry concealed weapons — including both firearms and knives — at all times. In Idaho alone, there are currently 71,249 valid permits. Neighboring Utah has reported 246,831 valid permits as of June 30 and has seen its number of valid permits rise 458.8 percent since 2001, when 44,173 permits were reported.

Thanks boisecynic. This was my third time up there and that area is so amazing and so close to Boise and the drive along the South Fork of the Boise River canyon makes it an incredibly beautiful drive up and back. I have a lot of pics; here is a view from Trinity Ridge Road on the saddle where the turn off is for the look out tower on top of Trinity Mountain. I believe this view is of Steel Mountain.

Where exactly is that canyon at? That is impressive...I've heard about a deep canyon on the Boise River, but isn't there a canyon for each fork of the river? I'm amazed at how many of these tucked away canyons are by Boise not to mention some of the most beautiful mountains and rivers anywhere!!!

Take Blacks Creek Exit just east of Boise (8 miles or so), head towards Bonneville Point but continue on Blacks Creek Road until a fork to the left at the end of pavement (few miles). This fork will eventually take you across the river and on to Prairie.

This drive can be a bit spooky, it takes you up close to Three Point Mountain and then along the high ridges above Luck Peak and Arrowrock Reservoirs (don’t look down) then all the way back down to the river level before crossing. Once across, a sharp incline ensues along the canyon wall all the way to the top. Once on top it finally becomes flat and the canyon disappears pretty much from view, for a couple of miles at least, until all of a sudden it drops off right at the road edge (not for the faint of heart) just before turning away and heading into the prairie area. Once past Prairie you can take the switch back road up to the Trinities.

Absolutely Awesome though!

It is an awesome drive. The ridge just north of I-84 between Boise and Mountain Home conceals a lot of extreme beauty. I have more of the canyon and mountains I might post soon.

I finally determined without doubt that this pic is actually of the Cabin Creek Peak Complex, not The General, Mt. Jordan, Estes Peak and Mt. Greylock like I mentioned a long time back.

Just wanted to correct an error of mine.

Beautiful shot Boizean. Even as a native of Idaho I'm always amazed at the vast array of sawtooth like peaks scattered all over the state.

Cabin Creek complex are the peaks that can be seen north of Stanley correct, kind of in the Bonanza and Custer area?

Yes, directly north of Stanley. Bonanza and Custer are almost directly east of the complex. Just follow the West Fork Yankee Fork to Cabin Creek and then to Crimson, Knapp and Hindman Lakes area. Crimson Lake sits in the cirque which would be on the backside in the photo.
