Mad and Noisey = Instant Headache for me. Way too hoppy for my liking.

Then I've probably made a horrible mistake.

But I bought blind this time. Usually I snap a pic of the selection and get Marty or Ayreonaut to pick for me lol

Well I find hoppy ales give me a headache. Mad and Noisey is a pretty popular beer in Toronto now on tap.

I personally don't care for mad and noisey - it's an odd tasting hoppy lager. Also technically not a craft beer as it is brewed by Creemore.

I also don't care for the Hops & Bolts. I find it pretty bland.

Just picked up the Yellowbelly St. Paddy's Day Pale Ale, like Sig has. Gonna try it soon. Looks like they've settled on single-hopped American pale ales as their St. Patrick's day seasonal. This year, they've gone with Sorachi Ace hops. Could be good. Will update shortly

I like it a lot. I've never experienced this taste before. The aftertaste is the best part. It is a bit grassy, or was at first. But I've enjoyed it.

Dirty Old Town is fun. It doesn't have as many layers as that Yellowbelly, but it's still good - at least as far removed from local macros like India and Blackhorse as, say, Smoke's is from homefries and tin gravy.

I kinda don't want to like Halifax beer as much as I do. But, there it is.

I'm struggling with whether or not I like it. It has a great malt backbone, and it screams Yellowbelly in flavor. But the lemon-y hops aren't really going so well with the dominant biscuit-y malt flavor. One sip it tastes pretty good, and the next sip I want to dump it down the sink. Really can't decide how I feel.

Dirty 'ol Town is pretty good, I have two more left in the fridge. Halifax is the beer capital of Atlantic Canada, for sure. Garrison is good, but I hear it doesn't even compare to some other microbreweries in the city like Good Robot. I haven't been to Halifax since the craft beer craze hit, last time I was there Keith's was pretty much the only local beer you could get.

I sorta want to come to Nfld to drink with you guys - kind of not joking. I'd bring some nice Ontario craft beers too!

There has been a handful of smaller breweries in the the city for as long as I can remember but the variety has definitely increased over the past 5 years. There is also more of a focus in local restaurants and pubs on serving craft beer from the city and around the region. Stillwell is a prime example of this.

Some other small breweries that have been around for a while in Halifax are Propeller and Granite. Granite Brewery started in the 80's and Propeller started in the 90's. Rogue's Roost was around for a long time as a brewpub but closed down a couple years ago. These days there are about a dozen craft brewers in the city (Keith's not included).

NS Craft Brewers' association: http://nscraftbeer.ca/members/

I visited Good Robot a couple months ago and thought it was great.

Feeling inspired by all this snow, I'm currently enjoying a http://www.gib.ca/beer/lions-winter-ale/ and dreaming of driving that awesome road between Port Renfrew and Cowichan Lake again....

Unfiltered is really, really good, if you haven't tried them yet. Their North Street pub, Charm School is a bit austere, but the beer is genuinely on par with the best American micros.

The new Two Crews brewery is good too.

Wow, it's strong. I was legitimately buzzed and on to the Newfoundland folk songs on Youtube before even finishing my first.

I'm torn. I heard it was the best so I was expecting a completely new experience as we've never had anything like this available here before.

But it's not THAT different. It is VERY good, but I'd put it in the same category as the Vache, or even a really good summer evening Guinness. The flavour of the Port Rexton one, even, was somehow... more layered.

But at the same time, it's easily one of the most delicious beers I ever had. I guess I'm imagining the range between average and best is broader than it actually is.

Or I'm just a peasant and can't appreciate the range. Oh well, I'm serenading the neighbours either way. lol

Those are both excellent choice! And quite strong, to say the least.

Man, I never check in to this thread anymore because I can brag to the St. John's boys on FB and I can see niwell's drinks on untappd. It's just easier to take a phone pic and send it on those apps than to host & post.

Anyway, St. Paddy's weekend was also a friend's bachelorette-but-not-really weekend and 10 of us got an Airbnb in Banff and went hard until 4am two nights in a row. Many beers were drank; many beers were forgotten. I believe I remember Driftwood's Black Stone Porter being my favourite of the weekend. Also, my girlfriend has gotten into barley wine lately. So proud!
