What does the person being transgender have anything to do with anything?

You ever hear of hate crimes where people are killed and the motive is simply their existence? Don't act like the transgender community is immune to it.

Des Moines had another two murders this weekend, so up to 18.

Insanely high numbers for that city, I'm assuming it's just an atypical year, that happens from time to time. Nothing concrete happened that would increase the murder rate by over twice as many as normal in one sudden year.

I remember when Iowa City had 8 murders one year and everyone freaked out since it normally had 0-1 murders. It went back down to basically 0 murders per year and stayed there.

Was this ruled a hate crime? Sometimes a murder is just that, a murder.

Only that the DA is trying to decide if it was a hate crime.

Well, as of the 19th the DA isn't claiming this is a hate crime.

My issue is this, LGBT websites are automatically posting this as the 'on-going' war on lgbt. This has zero to do with sexual orientation, so why stoke fears? Now, someone will be told, "hey that case had nothing to do with them being trans" and someone could respond "well that doesn't take away from the fact that it DOES happen " it dilutes the real issue.

People should be reserved in making such statements.

Since you seem to know about these stats do you know how many cities are seeing abnormally high murder rates this year? It seems like across the country people are being murdered at alarming rates. What is causing this spike?

As an example my normally quiet south Denver neighborhood has seen two people shot and killed in the last week and citywide I am constantly hearing about homicides.

Looking like Louisville KY is going to go back to back years with record breaking numbers

Eastern Kentucky is also having a really bad year but I don't have the numbers.

Well it's obviously their opinion that the DA is wrong. Just because it's not being charged as a hate crime doesnt mean it wasn't a hate crime. DA's arent always 100% infallible or honest, and this is a country where both muslims and LGBT people are often victimized.

The only people who would have a problem with them feeling that this is a hate crime, would be people who already have a problem with them, IMO.

I don't think that Baltimore number is that high. (I checked, 135 on June 28, 2016 - so 11 more than a year ago).

Quebec City is at 8 up from 1 last year. Part of the increase is that 2015 was a good (low) year for many, many cities so that even a small uptick makes things worse. Remember, for almost all these cities 2010 was worse than 2016 or 2017 and the late 1990s and early 2000s much worse.

Quebec City had a double killing by arson which the police have labelled manslaughter.

I believe Phoenix is at 61 relevant deaths, of which 2 have been ruled justifiable homicides, 1 is non-negligent manslaughter, and determination of the nature of several homicides is still pending. So depending on how we're counting, I'd put Phoenix at about 59.

For context, that puts Phoenix roughly on track for its average of ~124 over the past 6 years, slightly above its longtime low of 113 in 2015, and well below its spike to 146 in 2016.

Its extremely high compared to years before 2 years ago. Baltimore is at 167 right now at the pace they are going they will break record that they just made 2 years ago.

While violent crime and homicides have been in general decline in Detroit for a few decades, either the city data portal is grossly behind, or Detroit's going to have a unsually low year. If the numbers are right, Detroit has had 69 criminal homicides as of June 24th. We'd be looking at 120-130 on the year when the city usually averages around 300, so something must be wrong with the numbers. But the post back on May 1 was also showing historically low numbers, so maybe things really have slowed down out of nowhere. Either way, it does appear to be a significant decline even if they are off a dozen.

Detroit has the second lowest unemployment rate of any large metro in the country right now at 3.6%. It has billions in development downtown and the economy is looking up, I would think that should help crime rates a bit.

Crime in Detroit always seemed to be more about poverty and desperation than organized gangs, etc like you see in Chicago. Easier to stamp out the first one than to break up the second.
