WestJet is offering direct flights to Las Vegas! It'll be a trail base, if good they'll keep it in Hamilton.

WestJet adds Hamilton - Las Vegas route to its fall schedule
Eleven-week trial will gauge interest from Hamiltonians

http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/a.../25/c7374.html

CALGARY, July 25, 2011 /CNW/ - WestJet today announced it will introduce twice-weekly service from Hamilton to Las Vegas for an 11-week trial period beginning September 9, 2011.

"This is definitely new for us," commented John MacLeod, WestJet Vice-President, Network Management and Alliances. "As we prepare for the annual fall transition of our fleet we had a window of additional flying time over an 11-week period. The people of the greater Hamilton area have always supported WestJet and we wanted to thank them by testing the feasibility of service to Las Vegas. Based on the demand during the 11-week trial, we will determine if this route is a viable option to consider as our fleet grows."

Service from Hamilton to Las Vegas will operate Mondays and Fridays from September 9 to November 28, 2011. One-way fares for this service are available from $169.

So, I looked into it, and the only direct flights are Mondays. Every other day flies through Calgary, and you stay overnight in Calgary. Weak!

Also, it leaves Hamilton at night, and Vegas in the morning. Double weak!

That being said, if I can afford a couple days off work, I might just fly down to Vegas for a couple days in September or October?

Edit: Looks like there's direct service on Monday and Friday, not just Monday.

Las Vegas on Friday and Monday is the second most popular travel days for that destination with the Thursday evening / Sunday being first. This allows for 3, 4, 7, 10 and 14 day trips to Las Vegas. The 3 day trip only needs one extra day off from work. Monday to Friday is a 4 day trip with the weekends free at home.

I just wish it left Hamilton in the morning, and Vegas in the evening.

At $168.99 one way pp it comes to $848.86 for two people round trip including taxes. Not bad, not quite as cheap as flying with Air Canada from Toronto. Having to go through customs and security again at the destination nearly cancels out having to drive to Toronto...

I have been pricing round-trip flights to LAS from YYZ for a while now and the best I have come up for AC's direct flights is $100 more per person than the WestJet fares for YHM-LAS, and that is flying the red-eye home. The closest to the WJ price is if you select connecting flights coming home, but that still brings the fare $20 more than direct from YHM.

For me, this is an exciting addition to the flights offered from YHM, one I have been hoping would appear. Here's hoping the test sched pans out and this becomes a permanent slot. I'll be booking my Vegas trip from YHM tonight...

Is there a Spec article on the Vegas flights yet? Maybe I've missed it, but I would figure they would report that. I was always under the impression the some staffers lurked here.

Fight to and from Moncton was good this week. The plane was full, just two empty seats.

I wish WestJet had year round service to the East Coast.

Hopefully the P3 funding will be approved and WestJet will have more year round service.

Went by the airport and there was some work being done just west of the entrance to the terminal. Some backhoes were digging around.

Any idea what they are putting there?

I don't know how far west you mean! if you mean west as in behind the Purolator Sort Building. That construction is to expend that ramp from Kelowna Flightcraft all the way over to Centre Road. That will allow all of the Kelowna Flightcraft aircraft to be together on the same ramp. Right now they are spread out all over the airport.

If you are refering to anything else then I have no idea!

Air Transat will be announcing soon their winter program from Hamilton. I have heard that they are looking at signing a 5-year deal with Hamilton that may lead to a summer program.

Hamilton International Airport Launches WestJet Seasonal Flights to Orlando, Punta Cana and Cancun

Hamilton, Ontario (November 3, 2011) - For those looking for a break from Southern Ontario’s long and cold winter, starting November 5, 2011 WestJet will begin its non-stop winter flights from Hamilton International Airport to Orlando, Punta Cana and Cancun. These flights will complement WestJet’s current year-round, daily flight to Calgary. Winter flights from Hamilton will continue through until the end of April, 2012.

WestJet’s flights from Hamilton International:

* Punta Cana: Sundays
* Cancun: Saturdays
* Orlando: Saturdays
* Calgary: Daily

Bookings can be made now through WestJet (www.westjet.com), WestJet Vacations (www.westjetvacations.com) or your local travel professional.

“We are very pleased to welcome back WestJet winter flights this season; weekly flights to Punta Cana, Cancun and Orland are excellent leisure destinations that serve the demands of Hamiltonians and the surrounding region,” said Karen Medweth, Hamilton International’s Director of Air Service Development and Marketing, “Sunny, warm destinations are the perfect holiday getaway from the cold, dreary winter here in Hamilton.”

In addition to their winter flight schedule, WestJet will continue its non-stop flights to Las Vegas until the end of November 2011. “We are happy to say that the Las Vegas flights are doing very well,” shares Medweth, “Vegas is one of the most requested destinations for our region, and we were delighted to offer passengers the opportunity to fly from their local airport non-stop to Vegas.”

WestJet is currently the second largest airline in the country and pioneered the way for low-cost carriers in Canada. WestJet has been a partner of airport since 2000 and is currently the largest airline operating out of Hamilton International Airport using a fleet of Boeing 737s.

I am happy to hear that they are happy with the Las Vegas Loads.

Also I don't think the land is being cleared anymore I think they are almost don'e with the ramp expansion to better accomodate the growing Kelowna FLightcraft fleet.

I wonder why the LAS flights are being pulled at the end of November if so successful? I had heard that if the loads were good, that WS was going to look at year round LAS flights out of YHM. Am I wrong?

The YHM-LAS flights were a trial whil westjet had some extra aircraft not really needed else where. If the LAS-YHM flights did go as good as we all hope they did then I would suspect that once Westjet has the feelt avaliability they will lauch it permanantly.

I think the headline will read something like

"After successful trial service Westjet lauches Permanant Hamilton to Las Vegas Flights"

Anyway I am sure we will find out sooner rather than later.

One travel agent I talked to last week said the flights from YHM to Las Vegas has been excellent.

Hope they keep it as I would like to go in January.
