Agreed. Something about the top just doesn't seem right. But what buyer wants buyer gets.

It's neat when there are truly random penthouse additions to the tops of buildings though. Think all the old apartment buildings on Fifth Ave facing Central Park:

https://ds2.cityrealty.com/img/95560...-avenue-00.jpg

There's nothing coherent about that massing, but it works fine. And those apartments are unbelievable, because the odd massing creates terraces (not balconies) and gardens.

This building has much bigger problems than its massing. It's just bad PoMo.

How common is it, in any city, that someone can whip out the checkbook and add floors? Im not knocking anybody in any city for doing so if they got the money but doesnt that piss off the architect to high heaven or is there an incentive for future projects by doing so?

Architects (and most other artists) work for their client. If they want pure artistic expression, then they need to make sculptures in their studios (and most do).

I think New York has a lot more terraces in high-end residences, but there are still some in Chicago. For example, in the Neapolitan (1212 N Wells), the penthouse has a southern terrace and a west terrace that are quite stunning. I had the pleasure of attending a cocktail party there once when the wife of the couple who owned it was the Swedish consul in Chicago (married to some banker, which is how it was afforded - I'm sure the Swedish consul is well-paid, but probably not well enough to afford that sort of residence in by Chicago's relatively affordable real estate market).

I love the wedding cakes...

Very much related... I'm not sure I've seen this neat ArchDaily article from last summer, check it out: https://www.archdaily.com/873705/new...if-built-today

Very cool article, but I disliked practically every one of the the modern revisions. I'm glad there was enough interest and emphasis on styles like deco and beaux-arts that we now have all those wonderful buildings. I wonder what a modern interpretation of the Sears, JHC, Aon, Marinas Towers etc would look like.

A lot of work to pull the form out from between the old and new buildings.

The quicker 56 W Huron and 700 N Clark rise, the better. Anything that can help block out 70 W Huron is a great thing for our skyline.

Its amazing how fast buildings go up when you don't have to build foundations.
