Split a Census Tract

Census tracts sometimes contain multiple "communities" within them and/or don't always respect neighborhood boundaries. They are further subdivided into dissemination areas. Since 2016 Statscan has made this DA data available for everyone.

I've been going through some Toronto tracts (though this can of course be done for other cities and subdivided them into different neighborhoods/sections.

I am going to start with Tract 168, in the old borough of York.

I split this in two with Oakwood Ave. as the divide. West of Oakwood Ave. is the lower income the "Little Jamaica" area, east of Oakwood is whiter and more middle income.

West of Oakwood

Population: 2,435

Visible minority 71.5% (Black 23.8%, Filipino 25.2%)

University graduates: 27%

Average income: $28,851

East of Oakwood

Population: 3,160

Visible minority: 39.4% (Black 9%, Filipino 12%)

University graduates: 42.4%

Average income: $43,970

Here's tract 33 east of the CBD, which I split into mixed-income "South Cabbagetown" (east of Sherbourne and north of Shuter) and the rest dominated by the Moss Park housing project. The latter has the largest Black concentration downtown and also one of the largest Aboriginal concentrations in the city.

South Cabbagetown

Population: 1,700

Visible minority: 41.1% (Black 10.8%)

Aboriginal identity: 2.5%

University degree: 54.9%

Average income: $41,276

Moss Park

Population: 2,700

Visible minority: 64.1% (Black 37.7%)

Aboriginal identity: 4.4%

University degree: 18%

Average income: $19,007
