PIO doctor to open application of stem cell research in Nitte
Quote:
MANGALURU: UK-based orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Anand A Shetty will start a clinical application of stem cell research in the city along with Nitte University. This will help in curing cancer and other related ailments.
Quote:
In an exclusive tete-a-tete with TOI, Shetty spoke about his future plans for India especially the coastal city. "I began my research on stem cells around three decades ago when it was still in its very nascent stage. I got into cartilage and bone repair area. The biggest breakthrough was in 2000, where we did the first bone transplant surgery in the UK. To get such facility to India, with help of Nitte University, we set-up a multi crore facility in Deralakatte campus three years ago and a similar lab set-up in Hubballi for Dharmasthala hospital," explained Dr Shetty.

He adds in the second phase his team wants go for cloning. "We want to clone high-milk yielding cow and pig for meat production. To start the process, we want to have clinical application in five years or by 2020 in Mangaluru," he asserted.
Research began on Thalassemia: Research started by A A Shetty on PM's interest, 2

Summa: Research on Thalassemia will be carried out both in Japan & India. A A Shetty is keen to build a world class Cancer Hospital in Mangalore and carry out research on Cancer.

This initiative equip the students with required technical skills to complement their chosen fields of study.
Mangaluru & Udupi need enough Centres of Excellences for Data Science to work on various domains in which they want to lead like Health Informatics including Pharmacy Informatics & Ayurinformatics, Marine Informatics, Petroleum/Manufacturing Informatics, Education Informatics, Tourism Informatics, Agriculture Informatics. And institutes like Alva's may be on weather/space informatics as exception but focusing on identified domains is better for avoiding brain drain. If Subsea Data Centre is feasible near Mangalore then it would be great!

Multilevel car parking will be reality soon

Summa: Project will come up in 2.10 acres land with a cost of Rs. 75 crores.

Whether busbay is part of this project. Whether parking place for autorikshaws will be at ground floor? Whether project is financially sustainable enough to survive on collected parking fees? What is the time scheduled to recover investment by collecting parking fees? What about bicycles? Whether people can park and rent bicycles to move across? How many more roads will be identified as walkways so that people can park here and walk around comfortably? What about bicycles? Whether people can park and rent bicycles to move around? Whether bicycle parking place will be created in all places where they want to park them when moving to places?

Wenlock Hospital: ‘Get development master plan ready’
Quote:
At the meeting of the Aarogya Raksha Samiti of the Government Wenlock and Government Lady Goschen Hospitals recently, the Deputy Commissioner said the master plan was necessary to align the new buildings coming up on the Wenlock Hospital premises with the existing heritage structure of the 169-year-old hospital.

Manipal University had signed a memorandum of understanding with the State government to build a super-speciality block on the Wenlock Hospital premises and also to undertake restoration and repair works of the old building.

In addition to this, the Wenlock Hospital has proposed to build another new block on the hospital premises at a cost of Rs.15 crore. NABARD has sanctioned Rs.10 crore for this new block whereas the hospital would spend Rs.5 crore on building the new block from its own fund.

Mr. Jagadeesha said these new buildings, including the super-speciality block and a new block, should synchronise with the existing old heritage structure.

The master plan will give an idea on where to utilise the government fund.
New block of Lady Goschen hospital to be functional by Nov
Quote:
Mr. Jagadeesha told The Hindu that bids have been invited for taking up pending works of the new block for which the State government has released Rs.10 crore.

The work includes external electrification, setting up an operation theatre, high-ventilation air conditioning system and building labour theatre.
Stem-cell therapy for cancer comes closer home
Quote:
BENGALURU:Full-fledged treatment for cancer and bone-related ailments using stem-cell within the state could soon be a possibility if a plan of a world renowned surgeon from the state succeeds.

Dr A A Shetty is a highly decorated orthopedic surgeon and professor based in the UK who won the ‘Nobel’ equivalent of surgery called the Hunterian Medal, this year. In his aim to bring about next level cancer and orthopedic treatment, he has already set up two ‘big’ stem cell research labs - one in Dharwad and another in Mangaluru, a few years back at a cost of around 20 to 25 crore. A hospital that will treat stem-related ailments has also been envisaged at a total cost of around Rs 200 to 250 crore.

Setting up the labs is part of a three-step goal. “After setting up the labs, the next step will be producing the stem cells, whether it be for bone ailments, treatment for cervical cancer etc. Then the third step will be the application of these stem cells through our hospital or through tie-ups with other hospitals. I have already received the funding for setting up the hospital,” says Dr Shetty in an interaction with CE in Bengaluru. He is originally from a small village called Asode in Udupi district.

The lab in Dharwad is located at SDM College and is being backed by Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara and will be primarily working on blood cancer and thalassemia treatment. The one in Mangaluru is located at K.S. Hegde Medical Academy (KSHEMA) and is backed by the NITTE group. It will work on cartilage and bone fracture treatments.“The effort is no doubt for profit. We will charge the rich but the poor will be treated for free at our hospital,” he says.

Already, Shetty has recruited a number of top stem cell researchers from the state who are presently abroad. “I have recruited researchers who were doing their postdoc studies in Japan, South Korea. Presently there are four of them working at the two labs,” he says. Shetty ultimately wants to settle in Karnataka and hopes to achieve his goal by 2020. The third stage of his plan also requires expertise in various cutting edge technologies such as robotics, computing and he will also be recruiting people who specialize in these fields.

Cancer Vaccination

Shetty also hopes to make cancer vaccination a possibility. Giving an example of cervical cancer, Shetty says, “Few cancers can be vaccinated. Cervical cancer, one of the most rampant cancers, is one of them. We will use stems derived from iPS cell. In the UK, the vaccine cost 60 pounds. Our aim is to develop it and sell it at a very low cost, as low as Rs 100,” he adds. Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells or iPS Cells are derived from the blood and skiwwn cells and can be reprogrammed to provide an unlimited source of any type of human cell.

Stem cells for Arthritis

In 2013, Shetty devised a minimally invasive procedure to treat arthritis using stem cells. When the cartilage between the bones begin to erode, the bones rub against each other and cause severe pain. Shetty treated a patient suffering from knee arthritis. He drilled a hole into the patient’s knee bone and released stem cells that could grow into the cartilage. In all, the procedure lasted just 30 minutes. Shetty has already done as many as two dozen such procedures in India.

Trauma Center

Shetty also says that he wants to develop and provide integrated trauma services. “If a patient survives the ‘golden hour then he/she can be saved. Majority die in the first hour of trauma. My integrated services will have specialized suits that will help reduce blood loss and will have other know-how. I am negotiating with the International Rotary on this,” he adds. This may be established either in Mangalore or Bangalore.

Dr Vishal Rao, head and neck oncology surgeon at HCG Hospitals says that stem cells research is in the mid-stage of development and has great potential to grow in India. “The IT and BT ministry is already taking great steps by encouraging startups on these lines, starting various schemes,” he says. Vishal also pointed out that a number of private organizations, hospitals and individuals like those like Dr Shetty are also investing in the field.
Hope AA Shetty will set up all these facilities in Mangaluru itself. All in either Kunjathabail Health City or his home district Udupi.

Request all NRI Tuluvas again & again to establish all your startup ventures in Tulunadu itself to save it from ecological disasters threatened on it by real estate lobby of the parched city whether it is illegal sand mining, creating deadsea by establishing desalination plants of huge capacities or turning mother rivers of Tulunadu unjudiciously. Any further increase in population (fixed or floating population) of the parched region will be a warning call for coastal region! In fact if you want to contribute to Tulunadu, your home, then contribute by reducing population of the parched region of Karnataka.

The campus will have a garden of medicinal plants of Ayurveda as well as Homoeopathy further expanded by Research Centre, recreation centre, hostels, staff quarters and sports complex.

Tourism

Plans afoot to attract youth towards Adventure Sports

Summa: Rs. 4.45 crores project to come up near Pilikula in 6.5 acres land in collaboration with Wanderlust Adventure Sports & Tourism Department, GoK. Bungee jumping, commando slithering, cage rides, drinks in the sky, jump video, jump photograph are planned at bungee jumping station at Phalguni river lodge. Motorcycle dirt track, one kilometer zigzag obstacle track with ditch-cum-bundh obstacles, wooden rock climbing-cum-rapelling wall are also planned. Other activites include bull ride, human zorbing, water roller, olympic archery, rope bridge, bungee tug-of-war, sumo wrestling, big glove boxing, rocket boom, box spider web, boating at the rubber swimming pool, archery, inflatable rock wall, trampoline jumping jack.

With monsoon in the offing, beach tourism season ends - Panambur beach had 7000 footfalls per day between April and May 22 and on weekends 20000 footfalls per day on par with Kovalam, Kerala and Gopalpur, Odisha but lag behind Goa beaches.

Surfers make a splash, set coastal tourism booming
Quote:
Plans for Marine/Coastal Tourism

** Cruise of international standards in Mangaluru/Karwar through appropriate PPP frameworks.

** Coracles, catamarans, traditional sail boats and houseboats at select destinations

Measures

Strengthening of coastal transport system to move people along the coast and also support cruise tourism activities. - Karnataka Tourism Policy 2015-20.
Did You Know There Is an Indian Open of Surfing?
Indian Open of Surfing to kick off in Mangaluru today

Batpady beach remains undeveloped due to apathy
After Sasihithlu, smaller beaches cry for attention

A day after the surfing extravaganza Sasihithlu beach is back to its prestine self

Development akin to Sentosa Island mooted at Pilikula
Planetarium with advanced technology to become Mangaluru’s major tourist attraction
3D planetarium construction work inspected

Whether they will have 2D shows also or only 3D shows? There are very good 2D films which Mangalorean should not miss to see.

What Mangaluru should aim at is a Science & Industry Museum explaining working principles of various models of machines and their development through various stages of history like Science Museum in London. For example, ship models (Mangaluru missed aircraft carrier museum), rudder models, engine models, control room models etc, demonstration models explaining working principles and historical models explaining development stages. Museum can be in Pilikula or Taneerbhavi. Or, since Mangaluru is aiming to be Health City, at least we should have a 'Health Museum' with various equipments used by medical practioners in various stages of history and other medical stuff (much more than what Manipal is having now). Similarly theme based centres for other focused domains like petrochemicals (ask MRPL for investment as they have made good profit this year), marine, agriculture, video gaming, robotics etc. Even Sasihitlu can have a marine sports museum.

How many engineering & medical colleges in Mangaluru are having their own museums?

Does Mangaluru require an urban planning exhibition centre? (1, 2, 3) Good thing is city has planned for community centre as part of smart city project. Anyway there are so many tile factories waiting to be converted as museums.

Hitech touch to Tulunadu's Lagori: Tulunadu cup - 2017 from June 25th
Mangaluru: 'Lagori Tulunadu Cup' from June 25 set to revive childhood memories

One of the game which needs hitech touch is Marakoti (कपिप्लवन, a kind of tree climbing game). Wanderlust, which is planning for adventure sports at Pilikula, can also plan for this game by further enhancing its effectiveness by combining with rope bridge, tree house, tree net etc. This kind of desi-touch can add more to Pilikula's tourist attraction.

BC Road - Addahole fourlane concrete road works launched

Summa: 63 km long, Rs 1,064 crores is cost, to be completed in 2.5 years. L&T is the contractor. Uppinangadi & Kaladka will have flyovers. BC Road will have another bridge across Netravati & Uppinangadi will have another bridge across Kumaradhara.

Rs. 10,000 crores for highway development in DK

Summa: Out of this Rs. 5,500 crores is already utilized. Rs. 1,200 crores is spent on railway projects. Rs. 5,500 crores proposal is submitted for Pradhan Mantri Sinchana Yojana (irrigation project). Rs. 164 crores will be coming for AMRUT project. Mangalore-Addhole NH fourlane will be biggest concrete road project of the country. Rs. 1,000 crores is released for airport road runway expansion project. Rs. 63 lakhs is released for Old port to highway connectivity road under Bharatmala scheme. Efforts are ongoing for 4th plaform to central railway station and Mangalore-Hubbali Mahalakshmi train.

Whether it is Mangaluru MP wrongly claiming that Rs. 1,000 crores for airport runway expansion is already released or reporter reporting wrongly? And I can even not understand Rs. 5,500 crores already spent on highways. Which are those highways? When money was spent?

Mangaluru-Bengaluru Highspeed Highway Construction: Rs. 1.18 lakh crores sanctioned
Proposed New Speed Highway to Reduce Mangaluru-Bengaluru Travel Time to 4 Hours

Whether BC Road - Addahole fourlane concrete road works are part of this project? Will it just be fourlane road on both sides costing Rs. 1.18 lakh crores along with service roads? What is the cost of Shiradighat tunnel? Rs. 20,000 or 30,000 ort Rs 40,000 crores? How many additional flyovers/underpass will be there to make it highspeed? Whether pedestrian subway will be there for every kilometer?

Turn arterial roads into one-way streets to reduce traffic congestion, suggest MCC corporators

What is more important is how many roads around proposed parking building at Hampankatta old busstop will be converted to walkways.

Alternate road towards Kerala being developed along the Nethravathi: MLA
Quote:
MANGALURU: A project to set up an alternate road along the Nethravathi is underway, Mangaluru city south MLA J R Lobo said. State government has already released Rs 10 crore for the project and the project report is being readied and this road will come up on land abutting the river up to Kannur. When this road is complete, it will provide a by-pass for vehicles coming from Kerala and headed towards Goa without entering the city, reducing traffic gridlocks here.

Interacting with stakeholders at a flat meeting Shasakaru Nimmedege at Car Street, Lobo averred land rates along the proposed Nethravathi by-pass stretch will appreciate, thus helping the land owners. Likewise, under union government's Sagar Mala project, heavy vehicles can reach old port, Bengre, Tannirbhavi via New Mangalore Port and proceed towards the Nethravathi Bridge from the old port. This road will connect old port with New Mangalore Port, he said.

If this project is completed, it will obviate the need for construction of a hanging bridge proposed to connect Bolur to Bengre, Lobo said adding it will also accentuate the need for constructing a permanent roads to both places. The timely and early completion of this infrastructure will also give a much needed fillip to tourism in the area, Lobo said, adding it is imperative for any city to give top priority to fast tracking infrastructure projects if it wishes to develop.

Referring to other initiative taken by the government through Mescom, Lobo said the electricity supply company is now experimenting with laying underground cables and one such project has been implemented from Kankanady to A B Shetty Circle along the road. If this project succeeds, it will pave the way for city to be free from sight of dangling power cables that come across as an eyesore, Lobo said, adding Mescom had taken up the initiative despite the cost involved.
We now know that NH-75 will be a highspeed highway without need for bypass. Similarly I believe when Bharatmala (or Sagarmala) is implemented fully even NH-66 will be a highspeed highway. As I said earlier calling a part of Mangala Corniche (or by linking with Taneerbhavi road with it) as bypass has no permanent meaning and I also doubt anybody is going to use it as bypass any time. It will be just another road boosting tourism!

Underground cabling not only will pave the way for city to be free from sight of dangling power cables that come across as an eyesore but also increase beauty of the city by saving greenery which is axed regularly by MESCOM. But as I said earlier should use GIS tools to trace all underground facilities. Whether Kankanady - AB Shetty circle will only have underground cables or will also be Tender SURE? The way they are constructing footpath on MG Road I doubt it will be Tender SURE any time in the near future.

At last truck terminal with private participation: Officers are preparing DPR

Summa: Truck terminal will come up in 30 acres land in front of APMC yard, Baikampady. Mangalore SEZ will have warehouses and other logistics facilities. When Shiradighat tunnel road becomes reality truck traffic to NMPT will increase many fold from current 5,000 trucks per day.

Mangalore Junction will be upgraded soon

‘Will consider demand for train between Hubballi & Mangaluru’

Mercator Lttd awarded contract by New Mangalore Port Trust

Tragedy is Mangalore Port's railway income is used for other purposes rather than for improving the port's railway connectivity with the hinterland and hence to the port's further development. NMPT is the most unlucky port in India in this regard. I will be happy if Railway ministry at least half of income through the port is spent for improving the port's hinterland railway connectivity.

Parking menace echoes in MCC's traffic meeting

Corporator Vinay Raj said parking spaces in the commercial complexes have been illegally occupied by shops. There is a lot of traffic density at bus stands as the distance of two bus stops is less than 15 metres, such as at Ambedkar Circle and Hampankatta, he said.

Mangaluru: City to get desalination plant worth Rs 1500 crore

Let MRPL, MSEZ & MCF, together using about 11 MGD now, put up a desalination plant of capacity 50 MLD (13 MGD). With that extra 2 MGD will be available for their future expansion also. Later when other industries like Plastic Park come up another 50 MLD plant can come up in a place far away from proposed one to reduce the risk of increasing salinity level of the sea. When Pashchima Vahini is implemented undivided DK will get enough water for agriculture and drinking to support about 65 lakh people and hence no need to have desalination plant of that huge capacity which will turn our sea into deadsea and take away livelihood of fishermen.

The politicians of the parched city, inspite of knowing that DK people are intelligent enough to understand their crooked means, in the name of supplying water to Mangalore are trying to take way water to the parched city by turning our sea into deadsea. These politicians supported by real estate mafia after encroaching or polluting their own city lakes, and after spoiling westernghat by implementing projects like Yettinahole, are now trying to kill Mangaluru traditional economy with a big bang of desalination plant. The useless and shameless politicians (along with their technical advisors) of the parched city are even parched of ideas hence stealing new ideas on CIPET and Medical Electronics Cluster from other citizens. I request all Mangaloreans and other migrants from rest of Karnataka to the parched city show these politicians, who have kept other parts of Karnataka underdeveloped and forced you to migrate to this city by uprooting you from your birth city, the right place they deserve by uprooting them in the next assembly and general elections.

Biometric attendance system for civic workers in MCC soon

Why this road user ID card will change health systems forever

When can we do everything with Aadhaar itself instead of having 100s of ID cards? Why are the government is introducing one more ID card instead of integrating data like blood group, 'whether or not organ donor'. 'contact details of close friend' etc with Aadhaar data itself? Ask people to carry small Aadhaar card with them by issuing them small one, if people don't want to submit biometrics then make biometrics optional for issuing Aadhaar card of different colour/size. Similarly all data of PAN, Vehcile License etc also be integrated to Aadhaar to get rid of those cards. People can be issued multiple copies of Aadhaar card if needed just like having duplicate keys.
