I see that Wideman was playing on the 3rd pairing in Washington these last playoffs.

I think Feaster is huffing glue.

Meh. I thought it was a bit of an overpayment, and then I read this:

Quote:
Over the last five years, he ranks 10th among NHL defencemen with 53 goals and 15th with 201 points and in four of those five seasons, Wideman registered at least 20 points on the power play.

Factor in that Wideman ranks sixth among all NHL defencemen in ice time over that period, 24:15 per game while missing an average of 3.4 games per season
Flames have needed a proper puck-moving defenseman ever since JBo imploded. And a power play specialist who doesn't just bang it in from the point. Makes sense to me.

More than 5M a year for a D who's mediocre in his own zone.

July 1st is going to be CRAZY!!! Suter is probably getting 8M+.

The Flames clearly still have not resigned themselves to a rebuild.

I think they're waiting for Iginla to retire first.

Contrary to popular belief, there are more ways to rebuild than Fail for Nail.

Whether or not the Flames' annual rebuild actually accomplishes anything is another matter.

I don't think it's accomplished by trading prospects for older guys, either.

I don't think Jordan Henry or the 5th round pick will end up making a big difference, Calgary got the better part of that deal for sure. Whether Wideman is worth the contract we subsequently signed him to is a different story. The deal I dislike is that we re-signed Comeau, that guy was worse than terrible last year.

Preds inked Gill for another two years, worth 4M. Still waiting to see which teams throw the bank at Suter; I know Detroit will. Suter seems to want to leave, Weber on the other hand has stated that he wants to stay in Nashville. We'll see.

that's why the offer was only for 1 year, and for less money. Now he has something to prove.

10 years is a looong time. It is especially risky to give that to any goalie, let alone one who has had 1 year at an elite level. That cap hit is fair, and Quick is a great player, but anything more than 4-6 years and you start you get yourself into rough water. Here's to hoping it works out, as the guy is one heck of a goalie when at his best.

Crosby signed a 12 years, 104.4M$ dollar contract extension.

Big gamble by Shero... will Crosby stay healthy for 13 more years?

I just don't see it, being a gamble that is.
Signing for a contract of that length is the only way you get him at 8.7 mil per season. If they were only offering a 5 or 6 year deal I don't see how he signs for less than 11 mil per season. In the end it gives them 2-3 mil more in cap space per year to play with.

The guy is not Marc Savard, though that may not be a fair comparison because he's way more skilled to begin with. Judging by his performance last year, 11-34-45 in 28gms, clearly he can still play an elite level, where as Savard was clearly done. As long as he says injury free the guy is basically a lock for 100 points a year for the next 10 years. There's no one else in the NHL who you can say that about. He's the only guy in the league today worth a 100 mil (Malkin & Stamkos are close but not quite).

What happens if they don't sign him to this deal now and he goes on to have one of his prototypical 100+pt seasons. Teams would shell out insane amounts of money to sign him as a UFA next year
What are the chances the Pens sign him then if they turned down his request for this deal this year? Pretty low imo.
And there as no way they'd ever take that kind of chance with the face of the franchise (this from someone who personally likes Malkin more and think he's slightly more talented, but I don't think he'll be as productive/consistent nor as marketable as Crosby).

Look at it this way, here's the worst case scenarios:
-If he gets seriously injured and decides to retires at any point, then Pen's aren't on the hook for the reminder and it doesn't count against the cap.
-If he gets seriously injured and has the same mind set as Rick DiPietro...

...and plays the rehab game, then they'll put him on LTIR, and his salary won't count against the cap. Most likely they've insured his contract so they wouldn't even have to pay it. And even if not, I'm not going to be crying for Ron Burkle, Mr. 3.2 billion dollar man.

Also, I highly doubt it'll get to this, but even over-inflated contracts like Brian Rolston's (and apparently even Scott Gomez's albatross) have value in a league with a minimum salary cap.

Considering all that, its pretty much the smartest thing they could have done.

Schneider agrees in principle to 3-yr, $12m deal w/ Canucks.

Smart deal, dollars fair, term makes sense.

Oh I get that, and this type of deal has worked very well for the Flames recently. Comeau was just so bad last year that I don't think he could leave town fast enough.

With the Flames being my 2nd team, and 1st team in the West, it's very painful to have the post-lockout Leafs deja vu feeling that I've been having with them the past few years.

If Iginla goes to the Canucks I think that might be it.

Re-signing Sarich? WTF... I thought with Wideman here he'd be on his way out.

Sigh. One step forward, two steps back...

To be honest I don't really mind the deal, he's strong and gritty and doesn't make overly senseless plays either, not to mention we got him back for a discount... I'll DEFINITELY take him over bouwmeester anyday regardless if he gets points or not. He's a good defensive D-man, and hoping Wideman takes over for the lack of points from the blueliners, I hope this spells some sort of change with the bouwmeester issue...

We're certainly not in the runnings for Suter, but maybe a nice simple trade for a pick or prospects will help ease the cap space a little. My main beef is with bouwmeester and his lackluster performance. Sure he puts up minutes, but for what? He's not overpowering, more than often gives up the puck, and can't for the life of him win a puck battle on the boards. If there's anything to be said, bo is in no way deserving of his contract SINCE he became a Flame. I'll wait until the season starts to judge on widemans deal, but I have a good feeling about him. Something about his consistency seems very appealing. He and Gio could do some well rounded damage.
