Great photos and a great history lesson, particularly GW's soil. Funny seeing the Globe theater..... for some reason when I was at school I was selected to go and cut the ribbon on the rebuild.

One of the best photo threads of any city I've ever seen. The subject matter, the quality of the photography, the commentary...all top notch!

XIII - Ghandi

So, accompanied by Boudicca, the one-time queen of the Iceni, we resume our search for the prodigal sons and daughters of London.

Our last jaunt took in the troublesome colonials of the old British Empire, and we resume with another repudiator of the imperial yoke. However, Ghandi is now so venerated in the country that once imprisoned him for sedition, I’ve elevated him to the status of a saint.

The statue of Ghandi in Tavistock Square was erected in 1968; he sits here stoically, patiently enduring the English weather. It is almost as if, in one last act of spite, the British establishment has sentenced him to an eternity of drizzle.

His image and his words, however, can now be seen in bright colours all over London – adorning restaurants; the headquarters of insurance companies; opticians and tube stations. He is as much a hero of London as any of its Kings, Queens, Archbishops or Prime Ministers.

XIV – Thomas More

Hunched over the Chelsea Embankment, looking out at Foster and Partners’ equally round-shouldered Albion Riverside, sits Thomas More: the man who dared to stand up to Henry VIII.

More, a devout Catholic, opposed Henry’s break with Rome and was executed for his beliefs in 1535. His opposition earned him sainthood as well as a reputation as a champion of freedom and integrity – Samuel Johnson called him “the person of the greatest virtue these islands ever produced”.

Which seems ironic, considering that More was just as ruthless as Henry when it came to Protestant heretics. In his time as Chancellor he burned six men at the stake for their beliefs. Unlike the prosecutors of Bloody Mary’s reign, however, More is seen not only as the perfect Catholic but also the architypal Englishman, steadfast in the face of tyranny.

XV – Ignatius Loyola

“...be it ordained, established, and enacted by the queen's most excellent majesty... that all and every Jesuits... depart out of this realm of England....

“And be it further enacted... that it shall not be lawful to or for any Jesuit... to come into, be, or remain in any part of this realm... and if he do, that then every such offence shall be taken and adjudged to be high treason; and every person so offending shall for his offence be adjudged a traitor, and shall suffer, lose, and forfeit, as in case of high treason.

Under Elizabeth I, the Jesuits were public enemy number one. When she expelled them from England they were considered agents of, ‘the utter ruin, desolation, and overthrow of the whole realm,’ unless ‘by some good means foreseen and prevented’.

But time heals all wounds, and in direct contravention of Elizabeth’s 1585 Act of Parliament the Jusuits’ founder, Ignatius Loyola, is back. Tucked away in the corner of a church in the super-exclusive enclave of Mayfair, he takes his place amongst Britain’s financial and political elite.

It may be that Protestants are more self-effacing, or it may be (as I believe) that London is secretly a Catholic city trapped in a Protestant land, but whatever the reason, there can be no doubt that London gives Catholic heros like More and Loyola a much more flamboyant send off than it gives to most of its Protestant matyrs, as we shall see later.

Thanks for the bump, LSyd - your support has been great! I'm glad you like that building, it now houses the Conran fish restaurant, Bibendum. London has a few good art deco buildings, but very few buildings with the Art Nouveau elements that this one has.

Mr John, a London rock tour is an excellent idea - I always envied my brother, who is ten years older than me, and who had the chance to see the likes of Pink Floyd and the Stranglers in their pomp. In the meantime, here are a couple of grainy interior shots of the Albert Hall, and a shot with Battersea power station in the background.

Samne - thanks! So far, I've only covered central/north London, but I'll be moving east and south in the next instalments, so hopefully there will be more layers to come!
