XVI – St Alban

The City of London always stank of industry and rotting meat. When the smell got too ripe, the capital's elites moved upwind to Westminster and Kensington. That's how London became divided in two - government in the west and commerce in the east. In the middle - in Holborn - were the lawyers and the journalists, feeding off both.

This is where we find ourselves in our quest for Prodigal London – those who were persecuted or condemned by the city’s authorities, only to be celebrated in later years.

Tucked away behind the courts and the old newspaper offices is a church dedicated to London’s first martyr, St Alban, beheaded in Roman times for sheltering a Christian priest.

Recently there has been a move to replace St George with St Alban as the patron saint of England – on the minor grounds that St Alban, unlike St George, was English, saintly, and actually existed.

A statue of the saint stands by the altar:

The church in Holborn is one of several in London dedicated to St Alban, the oldest being this tower (all that is left after World War II) in the City.

XVII – The Lollards

In London, while Catholic and early Christian martyrs get colourful, gilded memorials, Protestant heroes have to be content with more humble fare.

The nearest thing to a memorial to the Lollards, many of whom were burned as heretics in the fifteenth century, is this street sign in an unfashionable corner of Lambeth.

XVIII – The Smithfield Matyrs
The Smithfield martyrs, also burned for heresy a century later, scarcely have a more impressive monument – a plaque hidden behind some stylised iron flames, standing next door to the plaque dedicated to our old friend William Wallace, who was executed in the same place.

XIX – William Tyndale
There were plenty of martyrs during the reformation – choosing the wrong side between Catholics and Protestants made you both a hero and a traitor.

However, there was one man, William Tyndale, who managed to attract the hatred of both Catholics and Protestants. Despised by the Catholics for translating the Bible into English, he has wanted dead or alive by the Protestant Henry VIII for opposing his divorce to Catherine of Aragon. On the run from both, he was eventually captured near Brussels, strangled and burnt at the stake.

He did, however, come back from this low point. Eventually, his translation of the Bible formed the basis of the authorised, King James version, which was to have as profound an impact on English literature as any other book.

Unusually for a protestant, Tyndale gets his own statue in Westminster. He also appears on street signs all over London’s more modern residential developments, like this one in the Isle of Dogs: there’s nothing like a bit of history to make a place respectable.

I've been followin this thread since the start but haven't replied yet. I appreciate the history that you're giving, and if/when I get a chance to visit London, I will know where to look for little pieces of British culture.
