Amazing thread. I thought driving through northern Ontario was nerve racking but this would freak me out. I hope you had satellite radio or an iPod to listen to on your travels.

Unbelievable! You're insane for driving that far on gravel roads. I couldn't even imagine how remote and isolated these areas are. But the photos are great, thanks for a thoroughly interesting thread.

I'm a city boy myself, and I found this journey at least as fascinating as city stuff. WOW!

So, how frequent are gas stations along that jaunt you made? Looks like your car gets a million miles to the gallon. I could see using a hybrid for a trip like that.

re: license plates...

PA is another state where plates are needed only in the back. And, as far as I can remember, Ontario and Quebec, at least, have had them in the back for the longest time.

Ontario still uses front plates. Quebec has not used front plates for many years.

From Radisson to Caniapiscau you will cross 2 gas stations. The junction with the Transtaiga Road is 78 south of Radisson on the James Bay Road. Then on the transtaiga road the first gas station is at km 286, and the other one is at km 358. So if you gas up at km 358, and go to the end at km 666 and back, you have to drive 616 km between 2 gas stations. I normally do about 600km with a ful tank, but I found that you can fit much more gas in a tank than you do normally after it first stops. After 616 km it was not totally empty, I think i could've continued to km 258, but didn't want to gamble it! I actually brought a spare 5-gallon and I didn't have to use it!

Thanks a lot guys for such a great response!
