New to Sketch Up...

Hello everyone

First off, I am amazed at the cities you guys are creating. The detail, the thought process, the ideas and the building/city stories are simply brilliant!!!

I have been lurking around here for a year or so, and thought it was finally a good time to download Sketch Up and see what I could come up with...

My biggest question so far is: Do you guys build your models in the city, or do you build them individually and import them into you city???

Any help or beginners tips would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks again...

I am one of the few that actually builds within the city itself. Welcome to sketch-up, hope it works out for you.

Welcome !
I reckon scale is the most important , Even an untextured (white) model can look realistic if so . I measure everything

Thanks guys... I think I will try to build within the city itself... (seems a little less complicated )

Austin - Thanks for the toolbar tip, I was just useing the basic toolbar at first.

I think I will go with a Las Vegas/Desert/Casino theme for my city... (As I am from Vegas) We will see???

I will post some pics, when I think they are worthy...

sweet! cant wait. feel free to PM me if you have any questions you dont want to post here

BUT a city within a city is harder and slower to work with.

Sorry for being persistant, but will it use textures or handmade detail?

I think I will try both at first and see what I like better...

So far I have been playing with picture searches on google and editing with paint... So far so good. I also really want to try and make my own at some point in time...

I would post what I had so far, but I am at work...

Well... Here is a shot of my first building...

"The Lost Wages Casino"

Only 1 shot for now, as I find the camera the hardest part of the program... LOL

Let me now...

Ran into some random issues here and there, but so far I am enjoying Sketch Up as a whole...

that looks really nice,I think you should make texture alittle bit bigger so its more to scale. I see youve got a nice street system goin. Good to start that early.

Yes I agree with the texture, it'll make it more in proportion. Other than that, nice job.

Yeah, nice. Just turn off the profiles. Go to View> Edges> Profiles. Then the edges of the building will look thinner and more realistic.

The roads, the main facade (it's from a pic of the Mirage), the casino logo, and the doors - yes

The brick that out lines the building - no

Thanks for all the complements guys!!!

Well, The Lost Wages Hotel/Casino (look, I added a pool, but have yet to find a better building texture) has a new "un-named" neighbor in the works... It is a "Wynn Hotel/Casino" esque knock off (1 single curved tower with a large base building) that needs a lot more detail...

The facade is broken down pictures of one of my least favorite buildings in Vegas - Planet Hollywood (the old Aladdin)... BUT... I found it pretty easy to cut/crop out some ok textures...

Side note: I am finding Sketch Up one of the easiest random programs I have ever tried to pick up... Only question I have is where do I find the (cars/people/trees) that I see in all of your threads??? Are they already in the basic Sketch Up (I only downloaded the free version) or do I have to download them from the 3D Warehouse???

Side note "Part 2" (lol): Should I start a "Lost Wages" thread, or just keep posting in this one???

Any help/suggestions is always appreciated...
