Former Alberta Premier and Federal Cabinet Minister im Prentice dead

Not sure where to put this but thought it best to start a new thread in the Canada section as he was a former Federal Cabinet Minister and Alberta Premier. Mods if you feel this should go in the Alberta section feel free to move it.

Really sad to hear this, and I'm really sad to hear all the anti Notley rhetoric tied to this in the comments section and facebook.

All a bit callous when you realise how Rachel Notley's father died.

Yeah. Was completely shocked when the unconfirmed news came across my Twitterfeed this morning.

Always liked and respected Prentice as a fed cabinet minister... a red tory type, intelligent, thoughtful, and able to bridge divides.

BTW, the crash happened after a 10 pm take-off from Kelowna airport last night. Apparently flew just 4 km and then spiralled straight into the ground in a wooded area just north east of Winfield. Have seen a pic of the impact site and it is quite small. The small Cessna Citation is a biz jet with an excellent safety record. Still scratching my head on this one.

Very shocking and sad. Two prominent Canadian politicians dying in plane crashes in the same year. (Jean Lapierre last winter.)

By all accounts he was a great man to work with and always wanted to come up with solutions to problems, he cared deeply about the environment, indigenous peoples, Alberta, and Canada. Sad news, condolences to his family and friends.

My condolences to his family and friends, as well as those of the other 3 victims of the crash. I happened to be listening AM 770 (Calgary) during Danielle Smith's show when the news broke, it was tough to listen to. Regardless of partisanship, he cared about Alberta and Canada.

Just a quick update, one of the other victims was Dr. Ken Gellatly, who was his son's father-in-law.

Interestingly, just read his bio, he had a five game stint with the Leafs. Edit: I read it wrong, it was his father Eric, his uncle Dean Prentice had a 20 year career in the NHL.

Jim Prentice was born here in Timmins, ON. I know some of his family here. Very sad for sure.

Our city hall lowered its flags today.

Incredibly sad and from all accounts quite an amazing man to be around. Sadly, he was handed a party that was a mess to begin with. He could have been quite the Premier for Alberta if his timing was different.

RIP

Totally concur. Lougheed was the last AB preem that positively impressed me. From an historical perspective. And, frankly, Prentice was Lougheed 2 in my books. Same reserved personas. Same styles/outlook. Etc.

Prentice had the added attribute of being very familiar with BC political culture that was another economic asset. Also established great rapport with the BC gov't. What could have been. Again, my condolences to his family. Don't ever recall such a national outpouring of grief for a poli such as today.

RIP to a man once viewed as a potential PM. I was always surprised he chose to lead the Alberta PCs rather than wait for Harper to leave.

Flags at half mast around Calgary today. Rest in peace, Jim Prentice and the other three victims.
