Building over rail is a great idea. There are many examples of this and it makes sense.

Great nighttime shots harryc!

^ Pappageorge?

Wells is looking rather nice in that render; is any of that work already scheduled or are they waiting to see how the 78 plays out? Although I vaguely recall the first of three phases of Wells-Wentworth work was supposed to be in Chinatown.

Are the white massing model towers there also by the same developer?

A multiple tower complex on the West Loop Target site would have been nice.

The westward expansion of the CBD is long overdue. Glad to see some taller and taller towers popping up west of 90/94.

UIC is a scar on the area. All of those parking lots and garages are such a waste. The only positive I can take from that photo is that I don't think 290 will be that great of a barrier assuming the area continues to develop as is.

I don't really mind UIC myself, the problem is the land use is poor as you mention with the parking lots. Good news is that UIC is apparently planning to develop at least the lot fronting 290, hopefully they will remove more as they go. Hell, build a multifloor parking deck if you need it and make it all green space.

^ Correct, the parking lots are UIC's strategic reserve of land. As they continue to transition from a commuter school to a residential campus, you'll see more of these lots eaten up.

Even with today's declining enrollments, there's still an opportunity for UIC to capture more of Illinois' students. UIUC in Champaign is among the most expensive in the Big Ten for in-state tuition, which is part of the reason so many top Illinois kids go out-of-state. It would be great for UIC to suck these kinds of students back. Admittedly, UIC will never offer a Big Ten college-town experience, but the big-city allure is just as appealing for a lot of folks.

To me, the most offensive thing about UIC is the superblock planning. No north-south streets between Halsted and Racine... Blue Island Ave completely eliminated north of Roosevelt, etc. Long-term, they need to open up to the surrounding city a bit more. Start by reconnecting Morgan to Harrison and Vernon Park Place, maybe with a little underpass like the one at Harvard...
