Still, maybe its just a girl and her little brother taking a shortcut through a lot with some old cars on it and nothing more. Honestly, I think the deal is these are people who don't want to hear it from anyone and that won't change, ever. There's nothing anyone can do about save for the long, slow, demographic shrinkage and migration to urban areas.
I've only ridden through on a bus so I can't comment about Arkansas but it looks a lot like parts of central-east Texas, namely Waco, Bryan, Corsicana, Hearne, and the Brazos Valley region . I think there's a shared history of agriculture(cotton and rice in particular), some old industry, college towns, a sizable black population, baptist, etc.
