Rizzoli Bookstore's Historic Ceiling Destroyed as Preservation Plan Fails

By Mathew Katz
July 8, 2014

Quote:
Jackhammers have begun to destroy the historic ornamented ceiling of Rizzoli Bookstore after a last-ditch effort to save it failed, according to preservationists and workers on the site.

The demolition of the neoclassical plaster ceiling — which dates back to the building's original use as a Sohmer piano showroom in 1919 — is already underway, along with the demolition of the rest of the 31 W. 57th St. building, workers said.

The Save Rizzoli Committee struck a deal earlier this year with the building's owners to remove the ceiling and preserve it, but the owners went back on the agreement at the end of June, the committee wrote in a blog post.

"In the days preceding the ceiling extraction, we had been in communication with Vornado Realty Trust to acquire their permission and insurance requirements for our highly experienced crew to enter the site and remove large portions of the ceiling," the committee wrote on its website. "By all accounts, they initially supported the endeavor, and everyone appeared to be on board."

The Rizzoli Bookstore closed in April after locals and politicians failed to convince the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission to protect its building.

Preservationists argued that the interior was worth landmarking, particularly because of the vaulted ceiling, ornamented with images of flowers and muses, but the city agency disagreed.

“CB5 is appalled that developers are choosing to put our architectural heritage in dumpsters and that no gesture is made to save any historic fabric of the Rizzoli Bookstore and former Sohmer piano showroom," said Layla Law-Gisiko, chairwoman of the Community Board 5 Landmarks Committee.

The building's owners, the Lefrak Family and the Vornado Realty Trust, filed plans to demolish the building in May, records show. Much of the interior has already been gutted, and preservationists said the ceiling was the last remaining intact part of the building.

"Not since the demolition of the New York Aquarium by Robert Moses has such petty vindictiveness resulted in the senseless loss of a cherished public space," the Save Rizzoli Committee wrote. "We deplore the demolition of landmark-worthy buildings and those who seek to profit from their destruction."

Vornado and Lefrak did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

They can deplore till they're blue all over; but they can't do anything and they know it.
And any litigation they file to stop the next step in the building's realization will be summarily thrown out before the judge hears the case.
The scary thing here, though, is that they know this, too...but do it anyway.

I invite them cordially to set up shop in Huntington Village just north of me where their so-called progressivism--IMO extreme even for NYC--can flourish unthreatened by stupid shadows.

I predict a 1,200 footer here. Anything taller would be a nice surprise.

I'd be happy if we reached 1,200 foot here. I have a suspicion that SHoP could be designing this tower (they mentioned at least 2 other supertalls in the works for the city). If that were the case, it would be nice to have two SHoP designed towers in such close proximity.

Yes, SHoP should design this and the DT Brooklyn supertall. I'm pretty sure Vornado wants to play BIG in the residential game, the market is hot!

The question is how soon will Vornado get this off now that 220 CPS is just beginning to rise. Maybe they will play it like Barnett, and start vertical once 220 is topped out and nearing completion. It all depends on how sales are going.

Sorry for being off-topic but do you guys know anything about 19 west 55 street. As per DOB, permit was granted for a new building there. Could not find anything on the web about that development so decided to ask here.

Filings show a 17-story tower.

Seven-star hotel” coming to Rizzoli site

Quote:
Vornado Realty Trust and the LeFrak Organization plan to build a “seven-star hotel” on the site of iconic Rizzoli Bookstore, Vornado CEO Steven Roth said at a panel talk today. The developers filed plans in May to demolish the bookstore at 31 West 57th Street. It was reported at the time that high-rise condominiums would rise on the site, but instead, Roth said, it will be a commercial use. Vornado’s priorities have largely been retail and office development in recent years. After 29 years, the bookstore closed in April, but is set to reopen in NoMad next year, reports said. Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer had rallied for the city Landmarks Preservation Commission to designate the property a landmark, but the commission denied the bid. - See more at: http://therealdeal.com/blog/2014/09/....dmu5VSAi.dpuf

A "seven-star" hotel. Get ready for more complaints about the wealthy.

Vornado Chief Plans ‘Seven-Star Hotel’ By Central Park

By Eliot Brown
September 9, 2014

Quote:
When landlords Vornado Realty Trust and the LeFrak Organization gave notice nine months ago that they would be demolishing the home of a cherished Manhattan bookstore, speculation was rampant about what the two property titans would build on the site. Now it appears there is an answer.

Vornado chief executive Steven Roth said at an industry panel discussion Tuesday the site of the now-closed Rizzoli Bookstore at 31 West 57th Street, just south of Central Park, is going to be “a seven-star hotel.” Speaking at an event in Chicago held by law firm DLA Piper, he offered little other detail, and was responding to a question that suggested he was planning condominiums for the property.

Only a handful of hotels around the world are billed as having seven stars, an unofficial way to connote extreme luxury.

A Vornado spokesman declined further comment.

Whatever the specifics, the prospect of a super-luxurious hotel would only add to 57th Street’s growing reputation as a “billionaire’s row,” where numerous slim condo towers aimed at the ultra-rich, with some penthouses listed at prices as high as $90 million, are planned or being built.

A new hotel would mark a deviation from Vornado’s course of late, as the company has been focused on slimming down its sprawling property portfolio to focus on office and urban retail.

The Rizzoli, meanwhile, has found a new home. The bookstore said earlier this week it would move about 25 blocks south.

Ok, so we know we're getting a "seven star hotel", whatever that means. Probably some retail at the base, and some superluxury hotel-condo units at the top.

Meanwhile, Rizzoli's new home will be here...

http://www.architecturaldigest.com/b...store-new-york

Quote:
Come next spring, New York’s NoMad neighborhood will have a new attraction for the literary set. International publisher Rizzoli will open up shop in the St. James Building, a circa-1896 Beaux Arts edifice by American architect Bruce Price on Broadway and 26th Street. Although the company’s historic midtown outpost shuttered, despite much protest, in April, this iteration may well have better luck. The bustling neighborhood around Madison Square Park is a lively pocket of Manhattan, with popular dining options such as Eataly and Danny Meyer’s original Shake Shack; shopping at Marimekko or Maison Kitsuné; and, tucked between the Flatiron Building and the Metropolitan Life Tower, great architecture.
