This building is financed. Its not going anywhere. I don't see what all this perceived fuss is about. They'll negotiate the contracts and then work will resume.

Bring on Torre Verre, The Drake and 225 West 57th!

Russian Billionaires Buy in U.S. as Mansions Lure Wealth
By John Gittelsohn and Oshrat Carmiel - Aug 3, 2011 12:29 PM ET .

Roustam Tariko, billionaire owner of Russian Standard Bank and Russian Standard Vodka, completed the most expensive home purchase in Miami Beach since 2006 when he bought a $25.5 million estate on Star Island in April. Photographer: Simon Dawson/Bloomberg

Vladislav Doronin, chairman of Moscow-based real estate developer Capital Group, paid $16 million in 2009 for the Star Island home previously owned by Shaquille O’Neal, the now-retired professional basketball player....

“In Russia, it’s a status thing now,” Jorge Uribe, a real estate agent with One Sotheby’s International Realty Inc. in Coral Gables, Florida, said in a telephone interview. “If you’re wealthy and you say you have a place in Miami, it’s like saying back in the old days, ‘I own a place in Ibiza or Monaco.’ It’s a cocktail conversation thing.”

The initial pricing, as per the www.one57.com, is $5m which, I assume is for a one bedroom of roughly 1,000 sf.

According to a recent article that I posted from the WSJ, an upper floor unit of 6,000 sf sold for over $40m which would amount to around $6,800/ sf.

This building will really take the light away from the area. You know the LIGHT. The LIGHT. But seriously i was here back in 06 and there was alot of light coming from the northern part of the street. I'm happier the building is being built Manhattan is Manhattan.

Michael Gross: towering infernal
The battle to build high on West 57th Street.

By Michael Gross
August 7, 2011

Quote:
...Extell Development Co. is building One 57 right next door. Worried about their vistas and apartment values, the folks with park views at Metropolitan and Carnegie towers on 57th Street watch in horror as Christian de Portzamparc's hotel-condo rises (it has reached the 22nd floor on its way to 1,004 feet).

...But back to my neighbors, one of whom recently wished aloud for another downturn because “New York has enough tall buildings.” I don't agree. Reaching for the sky is what this city is all about, and noise, dust and inconvenience will eventually be forgotten when gleaming new towers bring new residents, businesses, opportunities and visual pleasures to an area that has been on the brink since long before I got here.

My issue is taste. Mr. Nouvel's original MoMA design was awesome, and I hope it remains so after it's downsized. I think Mr. Portzamparc's midblock erection looks dreadful in renderings and will, when it towers over the Essex and Hampshire houses, give the architectural finger not just to its view-losing neighbors but also to the city's skyline.

Can anyone give us an idea of where the Drake tower will be located in relation to One 57?

The New York skyline will look COMPLETELY different in 2015. It's amazing at all of these construction sites going on!

I'm making a construction map for whole Manhattan right now..

Sign:
Red = supertalls
Yellow = skyscrapers

Title:
Colored = under construction
White = proposed/approved/etc.

Here's another view. Drake tower is red, 225w57 is green.

The race to the sky is on in Manhattan, smart planning gives this one an early lead.

Jesus, in that this tower looks small. Just hope the designs for 225 and Drake are worthy of the heights that they will likely rise to.

Anyways, awesome photo banned. Can't wait to see the cladding on this one.

Thanks. If you think the tower is small (in width/depth,) you should see the staging area for the site. It's about the length of six parked cars, and the depth of one car.
