Mount Saint Mary's University in The West Adams Neighborhood

More of West Adams

The Wilfandel Club is the oldest African American womens club. Established in 1945 and still going strong today. This was around the time when African Americans and other minorities were allowed to finally purchase homes in West Adams and other parts of the city. The house was buiilt in 1922

Thanks. And many were built in the late 19th century.

Nice pictures! I like the Victorian houses!

I remember seeing signs for Mount St. Mary's University on the Interstates out there. When I told my brother and his fiance, who both go to Mount St. Mary's University in Maryland, they remarked about how they always wondered what it looked like, to see the "other" MSMU. Then they said that the school in Maryland is suing the school in Los Angeles for using the name. What is being discussed about that out there?

How sad of me to see the decent genuine North-American-taste DTLA skyline is technically and permanently ruined.

Here I am telling you how and why. DTLA skyline is right on track of self-destruction just like his borthers and sisters in Canada, i.e. Toronto, Vancouver, together with newly-joined Montreal and Calgary.

Here I am gonna tell you how and why. Decades ago Toronto city center and Vancouver city center were just pure North American, office towers, box buildings in black and grey and white, with a little bit of blues for some modern bites that's OK. Nowadays they are all surrounded by high-rise apartment buildings and super tall apartment buildings with blue blue blue nothing but blue exteriors and can barely see the decent downtown core. Yea DTLA is right on the same track, almost there already.

I get what he's saying. Toronto, even just 10 years ago, had a distinct Financial District skyline, which you could see from the Harbourfront, the Islands, etc. Now, it's all shrouded in a wall of cookie-cutter condos. I don't think Los Angeles is getting there quite yet, though.

It's just south of DTLA on Figueroa and Adams Blvd. Adams is its main street.

A few more West Adams pics

This is the former home of Academy Award winning actress Hattie McDaniel.
She was the first black person to win an Academy Award for her roll in the 1939 classic, Gone With The Wind.

Across from the Hattie McDaniel House sits the Beckett Mansion. It was built in 1905 for Dr. Wesley Beckett, a chairman of the trustees of the LA Medical Assoc. and a member of the board of trustees at USC. This beautiful home was recently purchased and is going thru a major renovation.

Other West Adams homes and streets.

Where are those vistas at the end from? I'm trying to find the spots in Google Maps, but it seems like they may be farther west than the Adams/Hoover intersection and area.

Yes I meant to mention that those last couple of pics are from Kenneth Hahn Park just off of La Cienega south of the 10.
