Demolition of the area has started. It will be sometime before all is cleared.

The big hang up so far has been the ever speedy process of asbestos abatement. As soon as they are finished with that I imagine the building will come down pretty quickly.

Work in Progress sign for East Market is up. I wish I could have stayed until it was up completely for a better picture, but I would have been late for work.
Thanks to whoever gets a closeup.

They plan to block Market Street? The entire street along the site or a portion?

Most of the work has been inside the building but they did tear up the sidewalk in the alley across from Mitchell and Ness.

I have hated this blighted block-long suburban mcdonalds looking piece of shit since i was a kid. The asses who initially conceived of this 40+ years ago - by demolishing the top 7 floors of Snellenberg's, stripping what was left, and capping it with that fucked sheet metal crown - ought to be in jail for crimes against humanity.

This building is one of the greatest affronts to Center City urbanity ever. It screams "that I exist shows Philadelphia has no class and no confidence".

Honestly, i never thought i would see the day when this came down. I am not exaggerating when i say it gives me a new hope for Philadelphia that a developer finally has enough belief in the city to remove such an embarrassing blemish from the city scape.

love it, and you

I sincerely dislike wasting posts on what I call non-productive posts ( add nothing and do not forward the discussion/knowledge on the development of Philadelphila) but I just had to stop and congratulate Cro Bur on his post. It was seriously funny and seriously serious at the same time. I appreciated the liberal vs. scant use of profanity, the bold vs. shy application of criticism. I loved all of it. I loved it, and Cro. Thank you.

I'm astonished someone allowed a developer to destroy that beautiful old building. That seriously is treason against the urban fabric.
