In Dresden, Germany there is a whole quarter beeing rebuildt in its traditional style, sometimes invlolving some modern elements. The Neumarkt quarter, surrounding the Frauenkirche:

Typical 60s, 70s east german postwar structures.... not pretty at all, precast concrete slabs buildings

This photo is from 2005, just before reconstruction has started

Its also good to note that the Frauenkirche; ie the crazy awesome looking church to anyone who didnt know, was completely obliterated in WW2, and reconstructed in the 2000s, obviously before that photo had been taken.

The DDR began rebuilding parts of the Zwinger palace and some churches, but I don't think work on the Frauenkirche and surrounding area began until after the Wall came down. And the church had to be rebuilt almost from scratch; the walls and everything are all new, although they incorporate some of the stones from the old church, complete with burn marks.

The Neumarkt restoration work is really impressive. Too bad there is some truly mediocre 'contextual' modern architecture mixed in. The restoration work in Gdansk and Warsaw is also very inspiring.

Here's a small example I ran into on the archboston forum:

161 Commonwealth Ave. in Boston, MA:

Here is a DarkRoastedBlend post about a Russian wooden fairy tale palace being fully restored: LINK

Not all of the buildings there are modern constructions of an old design, but that wooden one is. They are calling the postings "Architectural Gems of Old Russia." Scroll all the way to the bottom for Part 2

AHA!

THIS Is what I dream about! A modern rendering of a truely tradtional era building in NYC! That complex looks as if it could have easily stepped out of the early 1910's of NY and been right at home!

Oh, If only this was on a larger scale, imagine how much more grand NY would look if much of the more modern steel and glass boxes looked like this?

The recently completed "South Hall" at the University of Michigan Law School.

This one was a surprise for me. I had no idea it was being built. This is the recently completed Tuscaloosa Federal Building and Courthouse.

Indeed. About the only misstep I can see are the windows. They are too modern and could use more complex framing like the South Hall building I posted.

Las Vegas, ground zero of kitsch, pastiche, etc. finally got a little culture in the form of a bona fide Art Deco arts center.

The Smith Center for the Performing Arts:
