The second first round makes it a good deal for Ottawa.

Not a conditional 1st in the trade. It is a top-3 protected* pick though.
Conditional 1st in 2020 IF Duchene signs with Columbus.

* What are the odds Pierre Dorion just discovered you could apply top-3 draft protection today?

Every other team that plays them now should just win by default for the next two games. If the oil didn't have bad luck, they wouldn't have any luck at all.

I fully expect the Oilers to win the two games without him then lose four in a row. Because, well, Oilers.

I'm a little upset over this because I'm in Edmonton and got tickets to the game tomorrow to see him play and now I don't even get that chance.

McDavid to appeal suspension?

The scuttlebutt on Twitter is McDavid will appeal the 2 game suspension and ask for 4 games.

The playoffs are a whole different ballgame. The Jets are still the best team in Canada when they give it their all.

The Flames have looked good this regular season, but I just don't see them as a playoff threat - sorry Flames fans - especially lately with the top line not producing as much, also just a lack of experience, and a team not know for ruggedness.. If I were a Flames fan I would hope they don't go out and make a trade before the deadline. Their best bet is to sit tight and let their young core continue to evolve.

I used to think the Leafs were Canada's other best bet, but not sure about that anymore. I still like the Leafs long-term however.

And Edmonton wins the first one getting outshot 34-21. Goaltending. Who would have thought it. First night of a five game road trip tonight.

Hopefully this puts them out of their misery. Technically they are only 8 points out with 2 games in hand. So, so, so wrong.

Interesting...the top line hasn't been scoring much lately but they still keep winning. That's a sign of a good team with depth that they can ride out the dry spells....something the Leafs haven't been good at.

Damn, Winnipeg just got even better on paper with the addition of Hayes.

Sounds like Calgary might be staying put with the asking price for Stone too high.

Flames don't need to go all in just yet, this core will be together for a few more years. That being said, would be nice to add at least a little bit more scoring punch...

The analytics guys were all saying the Jets are a middling team propped up by a lucky backup goalie even when they were winning all the time, and their theory seems to be borne out by recent experience now that the luck has apparently run out.

I would like to think that the Jets are so good that they can just mail it in to a weak Central Div and then show up for work for real in the playoffs, but I can't imagine you can do that in the NHL?

In any event, nice to see the Jets upgrade at centre even if it wasn't the guy they really wanted :\

Are there any other signs of the apocalypse because the Rangers never sell big at the deadline.

Rangers are in midst of a rebuild and they're doing a really good job of it, IMO.

The Rangers have kind of been trapped from starting a full rebuild with lundquist unwilling to waive his no-trade clause for the past few years.

He's at the point now where he probably isnt going to single-handedly carry a team of spare parts out of lottery contention.

I'm not sure I've seen a team load up at the deadline the way Columbus has this year, craziness! How close to the cap are they now?
