Nice aerial porn. That was delish. Thanks, initiald. Probably the most comprehensive Charlotte thread I've seen. Seeing all those residential blocks was surprising. There's a good bit of density there. And the Duke Energy Center looks great.

Awesome photos! I love aerials.

Regarding the "Neck"car HOF - As one of the few people who was in favor of it, I can tell you that I debated with people on this very site in the Atlanta threads who were not.

Yes, easily the best aerial tour I've ever seen of this city. The weather looked decent and you got some excellent shots! I still can't get over the red-clay soil; I love it.

As for the subject, the city still looks very young "New South"ish. I was surprised how ungrided and sprawly everything gets nearly immediately outside of the downtown area. But, for working with what you're given it seems Charlotte is doing that pretty well.

Great thread. Downtown is looking good with the new developments, but I can't help but think what will be when a lot of the surface parking is filled in with mid-rise supporting cast.

Very enjoyable and thanks for sharing.

That's the plan. Well, cities that are a couple hours flying time, at least. Probably Myrtle Beach next, maybe Raleigh or Greensboro or Winston-Salem or Columbia, and I'd love to do Atlanta.

Dude, if you're ever in town hit me up. I've been looking at taking advantage of this as a "staycation" option for my summer break (21 June to 5 July).

Charlotte seems to be ahead of the curve when it comes to new urbanism. It's almost like Portland!

I'm very impressed with Charlotte in so many areas, the new urbanism, light rail, density in uptown.

In looking at the uptown pics more closely, I'm not seeing many older historical buildings in the mix.

It appears some of these buildings were razed for surface parking. So many of our cities sacrificed alot of urban character for foolish needs, in the late 60's, 70's and early 80's.

Yes, a lot of the historic buildings were torn down in the 80s/90s. However, Charlotte never had the amount of historic buildings like Atlanta, Richmond or Charleston. The latest to be saved is the Carolina Theater, which is supposed to be remodeled and have a condo tower rise above it.

I like how Charlotte has focused on one area for skyscrapers and how all of the sports entertainment is in one centralized area. It should bring continued density to Uptown. I prefer having everything in one area, sort of like Chicago, Philly, etc....

Some of the surface lots should be developed despite the recession. As mentioned, the baseball stadium, Third Ward Park, NC Dance Academy, UNCC tower and First Ward redevelopment "should" all still be built.

Great thread! It has to be the best and I love the play by play. I would love it if you could do Richmond and DC/NoVa too!

Yeah, Charlotte didn't have too many historic buildings to begin with. Some of the old midrises were sacrificed to get some of our skyscrapers. There are still a coupe of historic midrises still standing, but they are now so boxed in and overshadowed by the newer buildings you have to really look for them or they will be overlooked.

Oh look, another troll of a comment from ls1z28chris

Maybe you'd be more at home at SSC. But here you're just kind of annoying.

Anyway, really great thread. Charlotte looks like it's coming along nicely with a lot of construction and some density around the core. And still room to grow.

Looks like ideal weather for your tour.
