A direct flight would also create demand, like they say, people in Arizona travels a lot, if there was a direct flight between mtl and Phoenix, with some advertisement in both Phoenix in summer and Montreal in winter, it would create additionnal demand.

Also, i wonder how many people from cities east of toronto travel to phoenix ie: ottawa, halifax, quebec... surely montreal could catch some of those connecting people instead of toronto which would help boost both the flights between those cities and montreal, and a flight between montreal and phoenix.

Markets like Ottawa, Halifax, and Quebec City are pretty small. Toronto attracts passengers from all these cities PLUS Montreal. Here's some stats I got from StatsCan:

Halifax-Phoenix: 4,700 pax per year
Quebec City-Phoenix: 1,8000 pax per year
St. John's-Phoenix: 1,000 pax per year
Ottawa-Phoenix: 12,000 pax per year

We only stand to gain from Halifax, and maybe some Ottawa connecting pax. St. John's and Quebec City's connecting pax is negligable.

I do agree, however, that seasonal flight might work.

Also, don't forget, Phoenix is now a Star Alliance hub because of US Airways, so Phoenix can become a Southwestern USA connecting point for Montrealers continuing on to San Diego, Palm Springs, Tucson, and Mexico.

But like I said, the priority for now is Houston and Charlotte, and perhaps Raleigh/Durham. After we get flights to those cities, Phoenix should be added next.

Good article...too bad Air Canada gives Pearson Preferential treatment at the expense of Dorval international.

What bugs me the most is that people from Phoenix have to fight for us, cause nobody here wants to fight for us...pathetic.

Habsfan, I used to agree with you on that one, but after doing some reasearch and getting a better understanding of the aviation industry, I now know that this simply isn't true. Air Canada serves routes that it feels are profitable. Looking at the numbers for Montreal-Pheonix, there is little to indicate that such a route will be profitable in the short term. Even if we attract connecting pax from Ottawa and Halifax, it still isn't enough because of their much smaller markets. Trudeau Airport is adequately served, IMO.

Toronto is Air Canada's main hub for a very good reason: It is centrally in Canada/North America, it has an enourmous catchment area, it has a strong economy, it has a much larger population, and its citizens fly a lot more often than Montrealers. Apparently, Quebecers fly the least out of all Canadian...only 1/4 as much! That number needs to improve.

Don't forget, Phoenix is a US Airways hub, so if the route really is profitable, why isn't US Airways serving it? Same with WestJet?

We will see a Montreal-Phoenix route in the future, but not within the next few years.

I do find it pathetic, however, that it is the people in Pheonix fighting for a YUL-PHX route and not Montrealers.

It's on their website. Just search for "origin destination passengers USA" and you should find them. The latest results are from 2004.

Although not public on ADM's site, the Montreal board of trade had a section on air traffic.

We heard that Jan was close to 8-9% growth, the official number for February was +7%.

That is excellent...I hope it continues through March and through the upcoming summer. We might hit 12 million pax this year...YUL is growing a lot faster than expected...actually ALL Canadian airports are growing very fast!

They should be sending the A380 this way by 2008 or 2009.

Not at all true! Ain't gonna happen...there isn't the demand for it.
