Orlando | SunRail Marks First Expansion With Phase 2 Groundbreaking

SunRail Marks First Expansion With Phase 2 Groundbreaking
APRIL 25, 2016 STAFF

The Florida Department of Transportation, together with local and federal funding partners from the Federal Transit Administration and community leaders from the city of Orlando and Volusia, Seminole, Orange and Osceola counties celebrated the official start of construction to add four more SunRail stations south of Sand Lake Road.

Today’s groundbreaking, near the site of the future Tupperware Station in Osceola County, marks the first expansion of SunRail, which began operations on May 1, 2014.

Phase 2 South will offer another 17.2 miles of commuter rail service between the Sand Lake Road station and the Poinciana station. It will also include four new stations including Orange County’s Meadow Woods neighborhood, Osceola Parkway, downtown Kissimmee and Poinciana.

In addition to building four new stations, upcoming construction work includes grade crossing improvements, construction of a vehicle storage and layover facilities at the Poinciana station, installation of a second track along most of the corridor, and an upgraded signal system. Middlesex-Herzog, a joint venture, was awarded the Design-Build construction contract this spring by the Florida Department of Transportation.

The work should take about two years, and the expansion is expected to open for passenger service in early 2018. The $187 million project is funded 50 percent by the Federal Transit Administration, and 25% each by the state of Florida and local funding partners.

While Phase 2 South is underway, the Florida Department of Transportation is laying the groundwork for Phase 3, a 5.5-mile extension to Orlando International Airport’s $470 million South Automated People Mover Complex and Intermodal Transportation Facility.

Is that phase II project? This is where they going next. Is that coming from Deland to Sanford and then continue down to downtown Orlando and then Kissimmee, FL, am I correct?

PS. Don't they have any news to Orlando International Airport? Don't they have extend service to MCO?

I don't believe the corridor to Deland (Phase 2 North) will be constructed before the branch line to the Airport (Phase3).

I believe construction towards Deland will not commence until they figure out how to get the trains all the way to Daytona. That depends upon routing of the rail corridor and getting access to that corridor.

Yes this is Phase 2 from Sand Lake Road in Orange County to Poinciana in Osceola County with 4 additional stations & 17 more miles of Commuter rail.

Phase 3 is to connect to the Orlando International Airport (MCO) by 2020 but it maybe sooner :

"SunRail officials are currently investigating a Phase 3 expansion, which would include a connection to Orlando International Airport.
Currently this connection requires transferring to a shuttle bus at Sand Lake Road Station.
The 5.5 mile route currently under consideration would travel 3.5 miles along an existing Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) rail spur, which runs along the southern boundary of the airport's property."
One plan would have SunRail trains branch north off of the existing OUC line and onto a new 2-mile spur that would terminate at the planned South Airport Intermodal Terminal.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SunRai..._Connection.29

The impetus with getting SunRail to the Airport sooner is that AAF's "Brightline" trains will have a station at the Airport in a couple of years and they need to have a Intermodal station that blends both transit modes.

Good news. This should be really good for Kissimmee (old hometown).

Phase 2 to Osceola County and Phase 3 to the airport are going to help SunRail tremendously. It may give it the length and increase in ridership to warrant the weekend and late night service.

Three stations in II/III are currently under construction and expected to be major destinations (downtown Kissimmee, Tupperware Station, and the airport intermodal station).

^ so wait, i saw in another video you posted that they're already working on the orlando airport station, does that mean that phase 3 is already under way? i wonder how long the ride would be from their airport into orlando on the sunrail?

The station at the airport is being built for All Aboard Florida/Brightline train services, not for SunRail, although SunRail could eventually go there, they will not be able to share the same platforms - just like at Miami Central. Brightline trains require high platforms, SunRail's trains require low platforms to accommodate wheelchair passengers. I'm not sure if Orlando is building low platforms now, or will wait for the future to do so at the airport.

The Orlando airport intermodal station is being built for eventual SunRail access. This doesn't mean that Phase 3 is currently under construction, its not, just that once the monies become available for Phase 3 expansion to the airport, it'll be ready for immediate use.

....and the test run will prove that running a Commuter train on the weekends makes sense !

SUNRAIL announcing new schedule for Southern expansion

Sanford – SunRail is announcing a new schedule for its upcoming southern expansion. The expansion adds four new stations; Meadow Woods in Orange County as well as stations at Tupperware, downtown Kissimmee and Poinciana in Osceola County. Two major benchmarks are occurring during the next few weeks.

On Monday, July 30, service expands to the four new stations covering 17 additional miles.

On Monday, July 23, the week before the new service begins, SunRail trains start running a new schedule on the existing 32 miles, as a preview of what’s to come in the southern expansion. Trains are also running the additional 17 miles during that week, but no passengers are going to be on board during that portion of the route.

The new schedule features more mid-day time slots, as well as running later at night. Service is increasing from the current 18 round trips per day, to 20 round trips per day.
