City reveals ambitious transformation plan to complement St. Jude's $9B investment

http://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/n...464&j=77104411

Lots of goodies in here...existing Pinch District plans, ideas for Mud Island, Riverfront plans, and gorgeous new renderings for the convention center upgrade.

That definitely ties in a lot of areas at once. Now let's do it.

Drove by Central Station today and looks like work has begun on turning it into a hotel. They have the entire place fenced off now.

The plan for the Pinch is great. It will definitely transform the way entering Memphis from the West looks. Plus the New Bridge should be getting LED lighting very soon. The whole area will look very modern. They still seem like they're not quite sure on what to do with Mud Island, but at least good ideas are circulating. The Convention Center rendering is classic Memphis; turning something old into something new.

I noticed in the Pinch renderings that they drew in a pedestrian bridge on Front Street so that people could reach the Pyramid easier. That is very necessary.

And it would be awesome if the side of the Pyramid facing Front Street could be illuminated by pictures sometimes. Like they did for the endangered species project on the Empire State Building. That kind of stuff attracts people at night.

If you have been to Disney, you have seen the projection show on the castle. Before you go "but it's Disney," there are churches and buildings in Europe that pull it off as well.

Thoughts on the possibility ?

Prairie Farms, city talk about moving plant

If they do move, then that would be some huge land available in the middle of Midtown, and in the Overton Square district.

A quick look at the "Gateway" project

http://www.commercialappeal.com/vide...ject/96721160/

Nice video on the project. Can't post the actual video like I use to.

Then here's a video inside Crosstown Concourse The Parcels at Concourse is the name of the apartments. Residents already moved in, more businesses will be opening at Crosstown as the year goes along. Looks nice.

This is the project in Memphis I'm most excited about at the moment. Just the sheer size of the building and the fact it's sat vacant and an eyesore for 20 plus years and the fact they moved so quickly on redevelopment. I think I read when finished it will have the 2nd largest amount of office space in town? Plus the fact there's apartments, offices, retail, restaurants and a brewery is pretty cool.

Plus, I think it will help the surrounding area a lot-- also the Gateway plan that would extend redevelopment from Uptown to I-240 backs right up to this area. Interested to see how things all pan out in the next 10 years.

Most definitely a huge piece that would be perfect for mixed use (hotels/apartments, whatever) that would tie in the Square and make a great addition to the district. Not sure what will happen but we shall see.

Historic Downtown Church May Finally Rise from Ashes

FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE
Hord Architects

Quote:
First United Methodist Church has been in the same location in downtown Memphis for more than 180 years. In October 2006, the 1891 Gothic sanctuary was destroyed in a fire. Hord Architects was selected to design a new 13,000 square-foot church plus renovation of an existing 32,000 square-foot Christian education building. The new building is designed in the Gothic Revival tradition. The exterior incorporates limestone, Mankato stone, brick, and a base of reclaimed original granite. Goals include permanence and transcendence.

Don't forget the High School that's going to be there. It will truly be a "Urban Village" in one building. It's going to be a busy place.

This what Memphis needs somewhere downtown in addition to adding attractions to Mud Island that facilitates weekend getaways. Imagine how many families from Memphis, North MS and the rest of the region will go there and imagine how many from Jackson Ms, Little Rock, and even Nasville, Birmingham and St. Louis would come here for one especially during winter holidays and spring break.

Just an indoor park attached to a new convention center hotel would be great.
