I had to mail a package to Montreal and I just looked at the map. I don't think I've seen anywhere with so many above ground pools.

It's definitely a more obscure little difference between French and Anglo culture in Canada. There was a stat from around 2012 that Quebec had the highest per capita pool ownership after Florida and Arizona I believe.

I remember finding this one in Gatineau to post to a thread on the city discussions board a while back.

Even just across the river in a similar Ottawa suburb, there are maybe a third as many pools.

Yes, suburban Quebec often looks like the San Fernando Valley.

BTW, don't want to get everyone too excited, but just to the left of that view is a "clocktower" Résidence Soleil!

This is actually very close to where I live!

On the section of Radmore at the bottom of the image, there are actually 13 houses in a row with pools. And 14 of 16 houses on that stretch of Radmore between the cross street at the bottom and the walkway/bike path at the top, have pools.

Correct, but some people do install one almost as a prestige thing and don't use it much at all. Obviously we're talking about in-ground pools in this case.

I feel like if you were one of the few houses without one in that neighbourhood, Luca Brasi from the local pool shop might show up and heavily suggest you invest in a fun pool "for your own best interests"

I didn't know that about Quebec, but I definitely notice it when I fly over Toronto. In some suburbs it seems like every second house has a pool, when they're hardly a thing in Vancouver. It surprises me because in my anecdotal experience people tend to be wary of pools, and I think houses with pools go for less money. People just don't want that maintenance headache (and the cost that goes along with it).

I rarely hear of pools in backyards.....so that looks crazy from my experience.

I think a lot of people at least where I grew up north of Toronto considered above ground pools to be tacky and eyesores. Unless you could afford an in ground pool it was better to just landscape your yard or buy a trampoline. My sister has one in B.C and she calls it her white-trash bathtub. Personally I would love one if I had a backyard, I would definitely put a deck around it to camouflage it. .

In ground pools are definitely best, but if you are thinking of getting rid of them as you get older, I'm not sure how much it would cost to fill in the hole and do landscaping afterwards. Probably at least $25,000.

Its a decision I will be struggling with in five years or so.

As you probably know, most people in Quebec don't give a shit about being viewed as tacky!

Yes, an above-ground pool in addition to being cheaper, also works better as a semi-temporary thing in your yard.

My wife and I were just discussing this, by the pool, yesterday afternoon.

Given that we live in Gatineau, Quebec and that our pool set-up doesn't take up the entire yard (not even close - there is still over half the yard that's grass), it's not really a resale liability in our case. Probably something of a plus in fact.
