Also, in the article there seems to be a mistake in regard to the height alteration. As of now the height is 1,136', not 1,117'. With the elevator implimentation that would bring the total height to 1,155 feet would it not? Seems so anyway.

It looks like some sort of amusement ride at Six Flags... climb to the top to see the entire park!

What if they added some sort of glass or metal veil around the entire skyscraper so that the elevator tower would not look like its protruding? Like the example below. If they use glass you would still see the real body of the building and its vertical lines. Is this a crazy idea? I think this would preserve the monolithic look somebody pointed out the elevator would take away. The veil would give it an updated and more modern look though but keep its main characteristic that is its singular block of structure.

Agreed. I pray SCB doesn't ruin it with that proposed elevator and redesign of the top for the observation deck.

Hint, they will. At least it'll be on the backside

But the proposed removal of 2/3's of the columns right before they reach the top on all 4 sides of the tower is a crime against humanity...

the tower is meant to be read as solid/campanile/obelisk... a very solid monolith (as has been recently discussed with relation to Vista)...

but if the proposed design goes through, it will display 80+ floor granite columns just wiggling in the wind... completely unattached...

This whole Willy Wonka idea of an elevator is stupid! Observation deck is fine but leave the building alone. Oh and don't even get me started on the overhang s#*+

Personally, the external elevator doesn't bother me; it'll probably be relatively unnoticeable most of the time due to where its placed... its what they want to do to the top that really bothers me because it will be noticeable from... everywhere...
Case in point; the video showcasing the project on their website...

This is horrible. The worst part isn't even the glass tumor, it's cutting the columns at the crown. That will destroy the verticality!

Putting it on the corner is just weird IMO. If they're going to add an elevator core, it should be in the middle of the facade on the north side, and orthogonal to the building.

Of course, that means some corporate folks would lose their views... but the elevator shaft could also be detached from the building, with an open-air catwalk bringing people back into the building at observation deck level.

It's too bad we can't get a pod elevator without an enclosed shaft. I imagine ice would be the main problem with that kind of system...

Is nobody bothered by the fact that this destroys the building from an architectural standpoint?

It's a cool concept but looks terrible.

If it were invisible I'd be all for it. But it's not and it ruins one of my favorite buildings.

601W Companies’ $185M Aon Center observation deck pitch earns blessing of key alderman

Quote:
An $185 million proposal by 601W Companies to retool the Aon Center with a carnival-like observation deck is set to be approved by Alderman Alderman Brendan Reilly (42nd), the City Council’s key gatekeeper for Downtown development.

The New York-based developer submitted an application last month for the zoning change needed in order for its renovation to go forward, and the alderman signaled he will support it, according to Crain’s.

The revamp, proposed earlier this year, would add a pair of glassy external elevator shafts along the tower’s northwest corner, as well as a levered pod that would hoist adventurous tourists over the roof of the 83-story building.
