As the Edmonton Oilers enjoy their first playoff run in 11 years, fans have started to notice something odd about their new downtown arena: There are few places to pee.

With lineups for washrooms lasting the entirety of an intermission, desperate men have been seen taking aim at sinks. Meanwhile, the alleys and doorways of downtown Edmonton have begun to take on a distinctive playoff smell.

So what gives? Why can’t attendees at one of the NHL’s most expensive venues relieve themselves? As one fan complained on Twitter, “for (the) price I pay for season tickets, I shouldn’t have to miss play to pee.”

Well...this sounds like an issue that needs addressing.

However.

What I have done since day one going to any event EVER.... Is to go get something to eat or take a piss during the event. And not during the intermission. I mean really. How long does it take to get up...rip to the can, and take a leak! About 3 to 4 min of missing a bit of action.

Some say they spend 300 bills on a seat and they want better washrooms. They have a point forsure. But be smarter than your seat

I am surprised pay public toilets aren't more of a thing here. I would gladly pay $1 to use a clean bright self cleaning toilet located in a busy area so hobos don't take it over.

I fear something like that would go against our prudish populations delicate sensibilities though.

The men's washrooms need more toilets, not just urinals. I know many people find this hard to believe, especially those in the development industry, but guys have to empty their bowels too. Even moreso for those who suffer from an IBD (Alberta has a high incidence rate), or after eating some of the arena's culinary offerings.

Bleeding harts would loose their mind! "how do the marginalized people afford to use pay washrooms"

yes. that's the benefit of this....you keep these washrooms clean by keeping street rats out of them.

Personally I would rather the disenfranchised use a free public toilet rather than dropping a load out in public (sidewalk, pedway, etc), which does happen on more than occasionally.

So, the day after the God-Fearing Flames of the Centre of the parallel universe are swept from the playoffs, the Calgary-edited National joke finds a negative story to run about Edmonton.

Shocking.

Well, no - fully expected actually.

I think Tristan Hopper writes from his parent's basement somewhere in Edmonton. He is generally a purveyor of click bait and really cannot be considered a journalist in any true sense of the word.

Public toilets - City is looking to locate a monitored toilet trailer facility somewhere off 104 Street for the playoffs. TBD.

Public washrooms for DT report go to Urban Planning Committee soon I believe.

Clear intent, but a very good article about how our city has changed.

We'll see. King is playing the heavy that Katz took on for himself.

Not sure that tactic is winning any points though in C-Town.

It's hard to play that angle when the biggest threat in the team owner's arsenal (relocation) is pretty well useless in Calgary. Everybody and their dog knows that if the Flames leave, another team will show up instantly.

a hypothetical question - would we trade our completed arena for Calgary's Airport connections or their head office status?

I would say yes in a heartbeat

As these new efforts weren't in place on Saturday evening, I'd suggest those ticketed should have the tix canceled and those towed compensated.

Frankly, I think the whole parking ban is bogus overkill. (fwiw, I'm not personally impacted one way or the other.)
