It cracks me up the random things they seem to have picked to advertise. People miss strange things when they move away. They might've had Pineapple Crush once a year on a hot summer day, and suddenly they need one with every meal.

BTW, at the risk of preaching at you about something that is also completely normal in Nova Scotia (I don't know), give bakeapple jam a try if you get the chance. It's sssooo tart. It almost makes your face squish eating it. Delicious.

Never heard of "Essence Ginger Beverage" before. Misread one sign as "Homeless Salt Cod Fillets". Our Snowballs and Caramel Logs are actually Scottish imports. What's with "Franco American Spaghetti-O's"? Do we have different Spaghetti-O's than on the mainland?

Pease pudding and salt beef, though. I don't really cook, so I did without when I lived away most of the time. I had dreams about those two. Jiggs at least one Sunday a month these days.

I have heard of it before but never had it. Once in a while you see some preserved form in NS but the plant itself doesn't grow in NS (it does grow in BC, in alpine areas). I'll try it next time I have the opportunity.

They're not all Newfoundland-specific items, although some are. Tancook Sauerkraut is from the South Shore of NS.

These are just screen caps from Google street view but I thought I'd share some of the interesting buildings in Saint John since it's so rarely posted on here.

Saint John is a treasure trove for creepy Victorians that look straight out of a horror movie. The decay helps.

The more universal name is cloudberry, also popular in Scandinavia.

Surprisingly, Nfld. products aren't always easy to find in Nfld.. And there is something about that window display that just seems odd and ineffective.

Very beautiful! Some of those Victorians look like the ones in Brush Park in DT Detroit, very cool!

Telus looks so much better at night. Those light boxes actually turned out pretty well.

Gorgeous Saint John pictures. That's one of the only cities that really makes me jealous. Lots are grander in every sense, of course, but Saint John's history is not so different than ours - and it was a comparable size, often smaller, for most of our history. Its beauty was something we realistically could have achieved and that makes me jealous.

Saint John's history is no so different from St. John's history?

For many years I have been hearing stories about tulip festivals in Fraser Valley, but somehow I have always missed them until this year. For the next two weeks fields in Abbotsford and Chilliwack will be painted in bright colors.

These photos are from the "original" tulip festival that moved this year from Agassiz to Chilliwack. The flower fields certainly make for a nice drive from the city.
