No one is preventing a private entity from building a stadium, but the info does not support the city even breaking even on the millions needed to build a stadium.
If really convinced, pursue a referendum on the issue and let the people vote on the expenditure.
So what concepts have been thought of for the site other than retail? I have not seen any reports or concepts yet so are they all still private to the mayor's office? Why would none of the concepts contain a baseball stadium?

The land is almost cleared, so should an announcement be made soon on what they are planning?

The city really missed out with the move of Sci Quest moving further out into Madison. It would have been an excellent opportunity to incorporate the facility with a Planetarium aspect, but alas it didn't work out. And honestly, the Coke site needs a whole new concept of mixed use. If I could play City Planner, I would build a downtown stadium, but on the outside, particularly along the first and third base lines, on the street would be five story apartments. Then, barring if Pollard Street will be still in existence or moved, build up the creek, have a large hotel that could also serve for the VBC, and make sure that the building is at least 8 stories (begrudgingly, we have to settle for he hopes of a building being that high).

Truth be told, the Coke site was the perfect location for a new sports arena of say 12,500 seats. But they chose to be cheap and renovate the VBC instead. After 30 plus years here, Huntsville continues to dissapoint me.

A mixed use development with restaurants, entertainment, and hotel would be great at the Coca Cola site....if the Monroe Street public housing is torn down and becomes a stadium site. Then you'd have the development between the VBC and the stadium, very convenient to both areas.

well Sci Quest screwed the pooch on that, the city did all they could to help them, it's well documented in this forum. Notice they are still floundering around on University Drive/Paramount Dr. They have not made the move to the much ballyhooed location in Madison.

yeah Sci-Quest kind of messed up their nest

"At its meeting last week, the City Council hired Reed Contracting Services to three-lane Governors West between Old Madison Pike and the bridge over the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks.

The $1.63 million contract also including a new traffic light at the entrance to the Cabela's-anchored Parkside Town Centre retail development; repaving a bumpy stretch of Old Madison Pike in front of Bridge Street Town Centre; and widening and extending a small road off Governors West that serves Hampton Inn & Suites, Home2 Suites and Covenant Classical School & Day Care.

That road will be renamed Cabela's Drive and become the main access point for Parkside Town Centre, said Huntsville Director of Urban Development Shane Davis.

"Knowing all the retail that's going to come in, we want to widen it to three lanes as a public improvement," said Davis.

He said construction of the 80,000-square-foot Cabela's is "on track and on schedule." Bulldozers and other heavy equipment could be seen Tuesday morning preparing the area where the foundation will be poured.

Cabela's has said the Huntsville store is expected to open next fall."

A few restaurant updates..at Bridge Street

A California chain with more than 120 food items and a wide selection of craft beer is coming to a new retail building in Bridge Street Town Centre's Phase III expansion area in Huntsville.

BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse is the latest new tenant announcement at Bridge Street, which recently welcomed a $20 million Belk flagship store and three parking areas. BJ's will be located in a new space by DSW Shoes and is slated to open next summer.

The 8,000-square-foot eatery will be BJ's entrance into Alabama and seat approximately 230 customers in a "contemporary American brewhouse setting," Bridge Street spokesman Van Geroux said. The national restaurant brand has locations in 18 other states, including Louisiana and Florida.

And Downtown
Asian Rim was packed Thursday morning as construction crews put last-minute finishing touches on the new downtown Huntsville hotspot for Thai food, sushi and Pan-Asian cuisine.

The 5,500-square-foot restaurant, which opens at 11 a.m. Friday, has a full-service dining room, sushi bar, outdoor patio and lounge area and "Express" model for customers who want fresh, quick-service food at an average $7.95 price tag.

The Birmingham-based company is expanding its brand to Twickenham Place, a multi-story office tower at Twickenham Square

and coming in the future
Dallas-based Cowboy Chicken recently announced it has signed its fourth new franchisee, for a total of 20 additional stores for 2014.

Dia Zuaiter’s 5-store agreement will expand the concept to Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Huntsville, Alabama.

Zuaiter plans to begin his development with a location in Hoover, a suburb of Birmingham.

Previously announced development gets new name

The $70 million downtown Huntsville mixed-use project initially called "Big Spring Square" has a new name.

The development, which will replace the shuttered Holiday Inn site across from Big Spring International Park, is now known as CityCentre at Big Spring. RCP Companies, which is building the site with Central Realty Holdings of Greenville, S.C., and Strand Development of Myrtle Beach, S.C., announced the name change Thursday morning on Facebook.

Downtown wayfinding to be installed next summer

At its meeting Thursday night, the Huntsville City Council hired Knight Sign Industries to install more than 150 new color-coordinated directional markers throughout downtown.

A rendering of some other directional signs that will be installed in downtown Huntsville by May 2015. (Courtesy City of Huntsville)
The signs will all have a unified look: dark blue to represent the sky; green for the mountains; and a wavy ribbon of lighter blue for the Big Spring where city namesake John Hunt built his cabin in 1805. Some larger signs will have a rock base -- a nod to the limestone bluff near the spring.

Demolition of Joe Davis stadium the 30-year-old ballpark could occur late in 2015.
Beyond that, what will become of the park that was once considered the gem of the Southern League?

According to City Administrator John Hamilton, the Joe Davis Stadium site is the target location for an indoor athletic complex to serve as anchor for the north end of the ongoing John Hunt Park redevelopment.

About the on going development. That seems to be a slow process at the moment. Still not sure how a retail area behind the old Copelands building will do. That building does need to go ahead and be torn down though.

Wal-Mart at Winchester Rd. @ Homer Nance Rd. ?

Could a Wal-Mart be in the works for the Winchester Rd. - Homer Nance Rd. intersection? The December 23rd Planning Agenda for the City of Huntsville's Planning Commission has as item#4, MAPCO Subdivision, 3 lots with Wal-Mart Real Estate as the developer. The location "North of Winchester Rd., West of Homer Nance Rd." Here is the link: http://www.huntsvilleal.gov/Planning...gendaDec14.pdf

Many probably don't realize that the City of Huntsville annexed a sliver of land along the Flint River in order to annex the property where the Publix is currently located (Publix wanted to be in the City for fire and sewer service). At the same time a parcel north of Winchester was also annexed.

This area has to be one of the most underserviced areas in the country as the closest Wal-Mart is on Sparkman at the Parkway and Target is probably at least 15 miles away. At the same time, there are several high end subdivisions adjacent (Edenshire, Riverwalk, Mount Carmel on the River) whose only retail options are the Publix and Kroger at Moores Mill Rd. Those who live in New Market have to drive a good distance to reach the Publix.

The question is, will they build a Super Center or a Neighborhood store like they just built in Gurley. There is nothing sure about this, but it has to raise eyebrows when Wal-Mart is the developer.

Century Automotive Group the luxury auto dealership is preparing to break ground late this summer on a new 40,000-square-foot ground-up BMW facility with 33 state-of-the-art service bays on 5.5 acres west of the dealership's existing site where the old Holiday Inn Express was located.

Century Automotive President Tracy Jones said the new facility will nearly double her company's footprint, which currently has six luxury car franchises on 7.43 acres of land on University Drive in Huntsville.

Further west on University Dr the new Audi dealership is coming along nicely.

At its meeting Thursday night, the Huntsville City Council hired Nola | Van Peursem Architects to design a second Olympic-sized swimming pool, smaller therapy pool, new locker rooms and other amenities for the aging swimming complex south of downtown. The Huntsville firm will be paid $1.14 million.

Huntsville General Services Director Jeff Easter said the new pools will likely be built in what is now the Natatorium parking lot and connected to the existing complex, which opened in April 1974. The project includes a new main entrance, lobby and concession area.
More than 67,000 swimmers used the Natatorium in 2014, making it one of the city's busiest recreation facilities. Swim team members accounted for well over half of all visits.
