Jackson County Judicial Center - Courthouse

Quote:
Location: Jackson County, Georgia
Client: Jackson County Board of Commissioners
Contact: Jerry Cooper, Ben Wauford

Cooper Carry provided master planning, architecture, landscape architecture and environmental graphic design services for the new Jackson County Judicial Center. The Master Plan anticipates the growth of the county and services offered to its citizens, and the incorporation of the existing facilities on the adjacent County-owned property. The location of the new center provides a cohesive and coordinated facility that is easily accessible from all parts of Jackson County. The new courthouse houses five courtrooms, two of which will seat approximately 120 people; two smaller courtrooms will be able to seat 72-104 people. Additional elements include: a public atrium space, jury assembly room, several jury deliberation rooms and judges chambers, witness rooms, attorney conference room and holding cells.

I really love designs like this. A new structure but with past influences. If anyone has any other examples of this kind of design idea please feel free to post them.

Glynn County Courthouse was executed far better than the first structure. It is strikingly beautiful.

The first one is pretty lame, as in indicative of trying to do too much with too little. The wings appear to be out of proportion with the portico due to the sparse and light detailing of the windows, compared to the massive columns. The structure doesn't feel to be tied together very well. Can't really tell if the curtainwall behind the columns is intergrated with anything like pilasters. If its blank glass, The facade would appear to very little connection to the interior layout with pasted on look.

The second one looks much nicer partially because of the more intimate scale, the more detailed ionic elements and the depth created by more visual activity going on at the front of the walls with the defined arches and pilasters ties the "layers" of the facade together. The cast concrete window pediments on the wings kind of look akward when paired with the really stripped down decorative brickwork, it'd look better with a more pronounced cornice or with a balustrade with more contrast to the brick.
