If they are paying soaringbadger thousands of dollars to do aerial shots I think it's probably more than just an exploration. This is most likely the revised design.

There is nothing that suggests this is new. If this design or a version of this design was part of the proposal group they would have had to license the images.

The fact that the media company is the one sharing this image is also pretty big indicator. When you license images for marketing purposes, particularly if it's commissioned or better than your run of the mill stock photography, you have exclusivity conditions. Soaringbadger sharing this is much more suggestive that it is a dead proposal. Otherwise they would most certainly be in breach of a licensing agreement.

Thousands of dollars is pocket change when your dealing with a billion dollar project!

I suppose we will just have to wait and see when they announce the revised plans. I actually hope it's not this...

I agree. Not a fan of this design.

Once again I did love the original design and we're all entitled to our opinions but this rendering has everything. Mega-tall height, spire, bundled tube design, glass, setbacks, character, etc. I can't imagine it getting much better than this.

If this is some random teaser then that would be a total shame.

It reminds me of the Zifeng tower in Nanjing, I don't love it, but it's not terrible/looks tall/could be cool.

Quote:
-No podium (kinda hard to tell though)
-Looks like it could have still been designed by SOM even though it is quite different from the original
-The aerials definitely aren't recent... missing quite a few buildings (potential sign its from the original design competition)
Most renderings use old photos, if you look at the renderings for projects like Central Park Tower or NEMA (just to name a few) they use way outdated photos of the skyline, not sure why, I guess they assume people won't notice?

The only reason I would think it's new is because I've never seen it before, maybe someone else has though?

Regardless, if this is what they end up building I guess Chicago will be seeing a new tallest (Lake point tower is ~650 so this would be ~1,800 to the tip)? I'd expect nothing less from this site despite how much I liked Related's original design.

I instantly thought of that one combined with Landmark 81 in Ho Chi Minh City.

Also, from what I heard from my engineering sources, they really wanted to leverage the hole as much as possible. Maybe that's why the design might be just 1 tower?

Why is there a thought that this is an actual updated design?

There isn't necessarily, but since it's never been seen before it may as well be shared.

It could be nothing, but maybe it's a leak of some sort

Highly doubt this is anything. When have we ever had a third party group leak something like this? It would be a pretty astronomical screw up by them to do that and breach trust of a firm like SOM. Insider leaks? Yeah, but not a social media page like this

Beats the hell out of me. SOM put a ton of effort into the current proposal and it's gone pretty far down the pipeline. Alderhack Riley complained about a few minor details which we assume will be ironed out; ie podium size. There is nothing to lead one to believe the two-tower design has been scrapped.

I love it. Reminds me a lot of the unbuilt 7 S Dearborn SOM was commissioned to design:

I'd note it also doesn't look like something Related would ever build. Maybe it was from way back when many different designs were sketched up as possible replacements.

I've looked at it only about 30 times between yesterday and today and it's already growing on me.

Full size.
